Bringing the Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon to Life
The RCD of the Santa Monica Mountains has been working in collaboration with partners to bring the Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon to life. The crossing would knit together two crucial habitats, which are currently split by Highway 101, and will be crucial for preventing the extinction of the native cougar population.
Although mountain lions (or cougars) in California are not endangered as a whole, sub-sets of their population in southern California face risk of extinction due to urban encroachment, vehicle strikes, inbreeding, and other risks associated with being separated by lethal traffic and freeways like Highway 101. Cougars living in the Santa Monica Mountains face a genetic diversity problem with a 99.7 percent chance of extinction in the next 50 years unless the gene pool is increased, based on a 2016 University of California, Los Angeles study. The Resource Conservation District of Santa Monica Mountains (RCDSMM) and their partners hope to fix this problem with a thoughtfully constructed and innovative wildlife crossing.
The 165-foot-wide, 200-foot-long Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon will span Highway 101 and connect two major cougar habitats. Liberty Canyon was identified as an ideal location for the project after a cougar attempted to cross in October 2013. The young male would have been a prime candidate for increasing genetic diversity in the southern population. It successfully crossed eight lanes of Highway 101, but was trapped by a retaining wall, struck, and killed.
After the cougar death, state senators representing the area called a meeting to see what the options were to help the cougars. Representatives from CalTrans, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, the National Park Service’s Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area Unit, and the RCD of Santa Monica Mountains came together to propose the crossing as the most viable solution.
The RCD received funding from the National Wildlife Federation to design the crossing, and final plans were created by Clark Stevens, RCDSMM’s Executive Officer, who is also an architect.

The crossing is not just a bridge, but also includes a larger habitat area to promote use by wildlife. Through a separate grant from the Wildlife Conservation Board, the RCD of the Santa Monica Mountains created a habitat thread down to the crossing zone, improved a man-made drainage ditch, and added a bio swale and a long thin riparian area. The project was badly impacted by the Woolsey Fire in 2018, but the RCD is planning on restoring the habitat. In addition to cougars, there are other species that have genetic problems and will benefit from connectivity of habitats. For example, wrentits, small native birds, need continuously connected trees to travel and would benefit from restored habitat and at the crossing.
The project has many agencies involved to ensure a crossing that is durable and functional for humans, wildlife, and the landscape. Along with the RCD, lead partners include Caltrans, the National Park Service, the National Wildlife Federation, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.
Unlike many other communities in the United States where large predators are at odds with farming and ranching operations, the Santa Monica Mountains have little to no agriculture production and the community is largely supportive of the wildcats. A Malibu Times article stated that “in terms of written public comments received, nearly 8,000 residents have expressed support for the project, while only 15 expressed opposition.” The regional relationship with cougars truly is unique—the only other city in the world that has big cats living within city limits is Mumbai.
The Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon project is still in its fundraising phase. For more information, please contact the RCD of the Santa Monica Mountains.
The mother in the animal world is generally the one who raises the children, provides for them and protects them. In some cases the father goes to great lengths to parent and protect his young. Here are the top ten dedicated dads in the animal world.
10. LION
The lion father heads a large family or pride that consists of lionesses and their cubs. The lion father protects his large family from predators.
9. ANTECHINUS
This marsupial mouse from Australia makes the list in the baby making department. This mouse can spend 12 hours having sex. He gets so involved that he forgets to eat, drink or sleep and soon dies.
8. GOLDEN JACKAL
The Golden Jackal of India mates for life. He also feeds his young regurgitated food.
7. GIANT WATERBUG
The giant waterbug of Japan is unique. His mate cements her eggs to his back. He carries them around for a week until they hatch, all 150 of them.
6. RHEA
This flightless bird from South America look similar to emus and ostriches. They are a polygamous species with the male having a harm of two to 12 females. The females leave their eggs with the father. The father can incubate up to 60 eggs for over two months with only two weeks of food to sustain him. He also raises the chicks for up to two years. On top of all of this he is a great protector of his children.
5. STICKLEBACK
This little fish produces something called “stickleback glue.” He uses this “glue” to build a nest. The female is attracted to the glue in the nest and mates with the fish. After she lays her eggs in the nest the father kicks the mother out and cares for the eggs. He does this by fanning them at 400 best per minute to keep the eggs oxygen-rich and waste-free.
4. JACANA
This bird is also known as the “little trotter” because he can walk on water by balancing on lily pads. The father builds the nest. After the mother lays her eggs she leaves and the father tends to the eggs.
3. DARWIN FROG
The father swallows the mother’s eggs. He keeps them safe in his vocal sacs for six weeks where they hatch into tadpoles. When they metamorph into frogs he spits out his children.
2. EMPEROR PENGUIN
This penguin breeds in Antarctica where it can be 72 degrees below Fahrenheit. After mom lays her egg the father incubates the egg by balancing it on his feet for two months. When the egg hatches the father provides its first meal which is a milky-type substance to sustain the chick until mom comes back with a belly full of fish.
1. SEAHORSE
Seahorses are monogamous. The female lays up to 1,000 eggs in the male which he fertilizes and carries to term.

mary cummins, animal advocates, wildlife, wildfire, los angeles, california, how to care for, animal, burn, burns, burned, treatment, veterinary, woolsey, camp, paradise, forest fire brush fire, ice, smoke inhalation, oxygen,
Here are some instructions if you find ill, injured, burned, singed animals in or around the fire area. Animals involved in fires have respiratory injuries due to the inhalation of air heated to a temps over 122F° which results in burns of the mouth, oropharynx and upper airway. The main cause of death on these patients is smoke inhalation associated to the fall of oxygen concentration due to carbon monoxide and dioxide during combustion.
Safely get the animal into a pet crate, container. Your safety and the safety of the animal are important. If possible, do not touch the animal. Lure the animal into a pet crate with a tiny piece of food. You can also corral the animal into the crate. If you cannot safely get the animal into a crate, stop and call a wildlife rehabilitator or animal control.
Cover the crate with a towel and place in a quiet place away from other animals or humans. Contact a wildlife rehabilitator or animal control. Do not give food or water at this time unless instructed by a wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian. If you can't find a wildlife rehabilitator or veterinarian, follow instructions in the article linked above and the one below.
The below link is an article for veterinarians, vet techs, wildlife rehabilitators about medical management of burned animals.
Richard Delp, Richard Martin Delp, beaver, washington, sexual assault, mary cummins, columbia, DOB 8-16-83, mental illness, drug abuse, criminal record, 36
On September 3, 2018 Richard Martin Delp was arrested for sexually assaulting a beaver who had been hit by a car. A woman had found the beaver in the street and placed it on a blanket to drag it out of the street so it wouldn't be hit again. Woman went to get help and came back half an hour later to see Richard Delp laying next to the beaver with his pants down. When she asked him what he was doing he responded "it's just a beaver." The beaver died. Delp wanted to plead guilty but Judge told him to hold off until he got an attorney. Delp admitted to what he did but said he was under the influence of drugs at the time. I don't know the outcome of the case. The case is closed. I see no sentencing.
Below are photos the woman took of the beaver as she tried to rescue it.
He has a long history of criminal behavior. He clearly has mental health issues and a drug problem to be able to commit this crime. I omitted the first one as the person had a different middle name.
