Santa Monica Mountain Lion Relocated Instead of Killed because of 2012 Task Force with Animal Advocates

May 22, 2012 Santa Monica police shot and killed a young mountain lion sitting in a garden area in Santa Monica. The public was outraged that the animal was not tranquilized and relocated. A friend of ours who worked for the City of Moorpark told us to demand an after incident task force and report to make sure this never happens again. Mary Cummins of Animal Advocates made that demand to the City and Fish & Wildlife. June 2012 they agreed to the task force, report and meeting. Cummins was part of the task force and at the meeting along with big cat veterinarian Dr Jennifer Conrad and In Defense of Animals.

The result of the task force was that if a mountain lion were again found in the city the city would follow a written plan. Fish & Wildlife would be instantly contacted. They would tranquilize and relocate the animal. Police would not just shoot it dead.

May 29, 2026 a mountain lion was again seen in the city of Santa Monica. This time they followed the written plan, contacted wildlife experts and tranquilized the animal. The animal was relocated alive. "A mountain lion seen in Santa Monica was safely tranquilized and relocated by a biologist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) in coordination with wildlife experts, including the National Park Service." Santa Monica police merely cordoned off the area and kept the public away.

A big thank you to the City of Santa Monica, California Department of Fish & Wildlife and the National Parks Services for doing the right thing. This was a much better outcome than the 2012 event. We're very thankful they agreed to a written emergency plan for humanely dealing with mountain lions.

Here is video of Dr Jennifer Conrad offering to tranquilize mountain lions after the 2012 killing.
