Releasing white wedding doves, pigeons is not humane - Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

Every year like clock work we get in wedding "doves" which are actually white pigeons. People like to release them at outdoor weddings. These are not homing pigeons. They frequently get lost and can't survive in the wild. They are easily attacked and killed by seagulls, hawks, crows besides other animals. They generally can't even fly that well as they are kept in smaller aviaries. It generally costs $200 to $500 for a homing pigeon release. People think they can just go to the pet store and buy a few for $20 each and just release them to be free in nature. They don't understand that these birds can't survive out there on their own.

Below is a great article about why it's cruel to release birds at events. I believe it's also illegal as these doves are not native. You can't just abandon an animal in California. It's a minimum $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail.

For the last two years in a row Pope Francis has released white doves in the name of "Peace." The birds have been instantly attacked both times. This is the opposite of "peaceful." If you watch the video, the people gasp when the poor birds are attacked. Even if they weren't attacked, they will end up dead.
