Blessing of the Animals Los Angeles by Mary Cummins of Animal Advocates

Mary Cummins of Animal Advocates at Blessing of the Animals in Los Angeles, California 2026

Blessing of the Animals took place April 4, 2026 at Olvera Street, La Placita in Los Angeles, California Archbishop Jose H Gomez gave the blessing. LA Animal Services, Best Friends Animal Society, Reptile & Amphibian Rescue Network had booths at the event. There were cats, dogs, bunnies, birds, reptiles and farm animals. Bendiciones de los animales.

The event always runs from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm. People start lining up at 11:00 am. At 2:00 the archbishop arrives in the procession from the church. He walks to the elevated stage and gives a few words about the blessing of the animals. Then he blesses the holy water. Some years there are politicians up there giving speeches. This year there were none.

The first people and animals blessed are the holy cow followed by the folklorico dance troupe. Behind that are the farm animals from one of the main groups. Reptile rescue followed them. They had a little kid kind of hosting up on the stage as the animals were blessed making comments. The archbishop stays until I think 3:30 pm to make sure all the animals and people are blessed.

It's been very hot the last few years. It was 88 deg F today. People had to carry their dogs because the pavement was so hot. Some dogs had booties for this reason. If you intend to go next year, bring a buggy for small dogs with a sun cover. There is no shade here. There is also no real place to sit. You have to stand in line in the sun the whole time which is sometimes four hours. Bring water and a bowl. Bring sun protection for yourself.

Just realized the first Blessing of the Animals I attended was 2005 as an adult. Think I also went once as a child.

15 year Anniversary of Raccoon Rescue by Animal Advocates, Mary Cummins

It's been 15 years since the infamous raccoon rescue from a boat in Marina del Rey, California. Peter Wallerstein and Los Angeles County Sheriff helped me take the cage apart to get the raccoon out. The small cage was encrusted in feces inches deep. The person with the raccoon fed and watered him through the bars because the raccoon would bite. We ended up getting him healthy and moved to a much larger enclosure. He ultimately went back to nature.

Original post about the rescue from January 2011 with lots more photos.

Brigitte Bardot Was a Lifelong Friend to Wildlife 1934-2025 by Animal Advocates Mary Cummins

Brigitte Bardot 1934-2025 was a lifelong friend to wildlife. She used her fame to campaign against inhumane practices such as the commercial seal hunt, whaling, fur trapping, wolf hunting, foie gras, horse meat, animal testing and bullfighting. She stated that wild animals were among the most defenseless victims of the modern economic systems. Her Fondation Brigitte Bardot actively fought against animal cruelty. We're thankful for her life long work helping animals especially wildlife.

Bardot had a complicated legacy which included racism and hate speech. I noticed when she spoke against others it was generally because of their maltreatment of animals and humans. She spoke against Islam and the ritual of Eid al-Adha because of their religious sacrifice of sheep. She spoke against Muslims because some Muslims following Sharia law committed violence and raped women. She spoke against Reunion Islanders because of treatment of animals specifically targeting the Hindu Tamil population's practice of sacrificing goats. She should have only condemned their maltreatment of animals and humans and not attacked or mentioned their religion, race or other attributes.  For instance we are against the Jewish ritual of religious animal sacrifice of chickens called Kapparot. It's only practiced by a few Jewish people. Most Jewish people are against it. We support Jewish people and only condemn the cruel Kapparot practice. Bardot didn't always make that distinction. #brigittebardot #AnimalAdvocates #marycummins #wildliferescue

Mary Cummins and Animal Advocates volunteered today with Project Street Vet examining pets, giving vaccinations, flea treatment, meds for homeless people in Echo Park. We did outreach today at three different locations where homeless are located. We started at A Bridge Home at 3210 Riverside Dr in Los Feliz. It opened around 2020. It's a 100 bed facility for men and women. They accept pets. I think we helped about eight dogs and seven cats today. We were in Echo Park and Silver Lake. Eric L Sakach Passes Away at 71 in Sacramento, California by Mary Cummins

Sad to hear about the passing of Eric Lane Sakach this morning in California. He was a Senior Law Enforcement Specialist at  The Humane Society of the United States now called Humane World for Animals who retired in 2020. Sakach served as an investigator from 1976 to 1995, and as director of the HSUS West Coast Regional Office from 1995 to 2008. He attended University of Nevada Reno and John Hopkins University. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph G Sakach, Elizabeth Lane Shay, survived by his brother Gary, wife Kathleen Stanley, children Jenny Wilson, Jacque Jensen Dawson, three grandchildren and a great grandchild.  RIP. 12/24/1953 -11/18/2025.

I first met him 15 years ago at a cockfighting raid in California. I was on the HSUS NDART team with him. Photos from the cockfighting raid 15 years ago. Article here https://animaladvocatesmarycummins.blogspot.com/2010/05/mary-cummins-humane-society-of-us.html

UPDATE: Merritt Clifton decided to write a negative article about Eric Sakach immediately after he passed away. He writes a few nice paragraphs about his animal loving family and history thinking that makes up for the negative things he later states. He basically blames Eric for the proliferation of dog fighting and human death because he or actually HSUS was against breed specific legislation against pitbulls. Too soon, Merritt, too soon. Eric also wasn't the head of HSUS and didn't make the position statements.  He didn't always agree with HSUS. He just didn't publicly say that on the record as an employee of HSUS.  https://www.animals24-7.org/2025/11/22/eric-sakach-71-busted-dogfights-cockfights-but-unleashed-pit-bull-horror/

I spoke to Eric about animal issues. When he worked for HSUS he stated the organization's position on animal issues even though it wasn't always his own opinion or belief. We spoke about wildlife issues. His own opinion didn't match or align perfectly with HSUS at that time. When he spoke publicly he stated and towed the company line. He told me that specifically because I disagreed with HSUS's wildlife position at the time on a couple of issues.  He actually agreed with my research backed position which was at complete odds with HSUS.

One big thing to consider is HSUS was run by Wayne Pacelle at that time. Wayne was best buds with Gary Michelson. Gary pumped tons of money to fight breed specific legislation against pitbulls. Gary paid for lobbyists, a white paper, donated to pro pit organizations, lawyers and actively fought against anti pitbull organizations and laws. Gary did this just because he bought and owned a couple of nice pure bred pits. I know this because someone lied and told him I was behind the main anti pitbull website which records human deaths by pits. I proved it wasn't me but he still came after me through one of his wife's friends. Gary donated to HSUS. Of course they will be pro pitbull and of course Eric will state the company line when asked on the record. Many HSUS donors are pro pitbull so they will be pro pitbull and make all their employees state the same. Merritt should be attacking HSUS, Humane World for Animals instead of a dead man.

I made a comment on Merritt's article which he didn't approve or post. I basically stated what I stated above. Bad enough Merritt bad mouths a dead guy. Then he won't even allow a comment which states that Eric's opinion was different than HSUS's position statement. Blaming a dead guy for the position statement of his employer a large corporation is just plain stupid. In light of his recent death also cruel and insensitive. Merritt should be writing the nasty article about HSUS, Humane World for Animals instead. He would not have dared said that to Eric's face.

This was right after the cockfighting raid on Facebook.
