Animal Advocates protests against non-Jewish chicken killing ritual Kapparot, Kappores in Los Angeles, California

Kapparot, chicken killing ritual jewish, animal sacrifice, animal cruelty Kapporois, Kappores
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB)  -- Every year for six days before Yom Kippur (the Jewish Day of Atonement on October 2) some Jews perform the ritual "Kapparot." Kapparot is a custom in which the sins of a person are symbolically transferred to a fowl. The fowl is held above the person's head and swung in a circle three times while certain words are spoken. The fowl is then slaughtered so that the person may have a good, peaceful life. Sometimes the chickens are given to the poor as food but unfortunately the chickens are not always cared for or killed humanely.

In Los Angeles, California ritual animal sacrifice of any kind is illegal under Municipal Code SEC. 53.67. "No person shall engage in, participate in, assist in, or perform animal sacrifice. No person shall own, keep, possess or have custody of any animal with the purpose or intention of using such animal for animal sacrifice. No person shall knowingly sell, offer to sell, give away or transfer any animal to another person who intends to use such animal for animal sacrifice. 'Animal sacrifice' means the injuring or killing of any animal in any religious or cult ritual or as an offering to a deity, devil, demon or spirit, wherein the animal has not been injured or killed primarily for food purposes, regardless of whether all or any part of such animal is subsequently consumed."

The First Amendment "Freedom of Religion" does protect animal sacrifices except when a municipality or state has an existing animal cruelty statute that forbids it. If the religious sacrifice of an animal violates that statute, then the city or state can prosecute that act. If the animals as in this case were cared for, used or killed in a way that violates California's existing anti-cruelty statutes, then the defendants will not be able to fall back on the First Amendment as a defense. They would be guilty of animal cruelty which is punishable by a fine and/or jail time.

Kapparot is not mentioned in the Torah or in the Talmud. Several Jewish sages opposed the ritual, with some considering it a senseless heathen superstition. The Ramban (Nachmanides) and Rabbi Joseph Caro the compiler of the "Shulchan Aruch," the most authoritative code of Jewish laws called Kapparot "a foolish custom that Jews should avoid."

General Manager of LA Animal Services and ex-pastor Ed Boks stated, "Some of our nation's healthiest animal husbandry practices and laws originated in the ancient traditions of the Torah. Nowhere is the practice of Kapparot even mentioned in the Torah. It is a pagan tradition that has been muddled into the religious practices of a small Jewish sect. Kapparot should have no place in the 21st Century Los Angeles community."

Andrew Smith of Chicken Rescue asks people who customarily partake in this ritual to instead consider the humane and legal alternative. One may place money in a handkerchief and use this instead of a chicken. The money is then given to the poor. Former Chief Rabbi Israel Shlomo Goren stated, "Kapparot is not consistent with Jewish teachings and law. Repentance and charity can be better accomplished by using money instead of a slaughtered chicken."

Dr. Karen Davis President of United Poultry Concerns said, "Kapparot includes the pre-ritual cruelty to the chickens, who are forced to sit crammed together in their own excrement for days without food, water or shelter awaiting their terrible death. The mercy ascribed to God by those who seek God’s mercy for themselves is thus withheld from the chickens who have the same capacity for pain, fear and distress as human beings. That Kapparot is a medieval custom, and not a Jewish law, makes it even more reprehensible."

Dr. Richard Schwartz, a respected Jewish author & educator, stated: "The use of money rather than chickens is consistent with Judaism's powerful teachings on compassion to animals. At a season when we ask for God's compassion, we should have compassion on God's defenseless creatures."

In 2006 we had an educational rally at the Temple of Pico just east of Doheny. We witnessed a man drinking the blood, see pic below. They also take the blood home in Dixie cups to smear on the forehead of their children and the elderly. The woman in the pic below told us she also smears some over her front door to ward away spirits and evil.

Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates rescues coyotes in Los Angeles, California

Animal Advocates, Mary Cummins is licensed, permitted to rescue coyotes in Los Angeles, California

Mary Cummins 17 Jan 2010 23:49 GMT

Animal Advocates has been rescuing ill, injured and orphaned coyotes in the Los Angeles area of California. We also provide humane coyote control and speak to groups about dealing with coyote issues. We recently received our permit to permanently rehabilitate coyotes at our own facility.
Coyotes in Los Angeles, California weighs 20-35 pounds and stand 23 to 26 inches at the shoulder. The coyote looks similar to a smaller tan colored shepherd-type dog with long pointed muzzle, large ears, long legs and a bushy tail.

Coyotes, whose natural habitat is the Los Angeles basin, have adjusted to their shrinking habitat by living closer to humans, sometimes in residential areas, parks and on the landscaped areas of the freeway system.

Because coyotes are now habituating closer to humans, they suffer the effects of our existence. They are hit by cars or are poisoned from eating poisoned ground squirrels and rats. They also succumb to sarcoptic mange from mites.

If you find ill, injured or orphaned wildlife, contact us or visit our website so we can help you or refer you to someone who can.

Animal Advocates is a non-profit corporation recognized by the IRS. We operate on donations from the public. We are licensed by the California Department of Fish & Game to rescue ill, injured and orphaned wildlife for release back to the wild. We rescue coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, foxes, opossums, skunks, squirrels, moles, voles, gophers, bats and more.

Baby ground squirrel being rehabber in Los Angeles, California by Mary Cummins of Animal Advocates

This very tiny baby who just barely has his teeth tried to make a break for it. He is now in the Fort Knox of enclosures which is all metal. He's an extremely small runt of the litter who can't even sit up. I separated him because his siblings were too rough with him. I've since put him back in with his siblings and am watching them carefully.

Some animal activists are protesting Brenda Barnette the General Manager of Los Angeles Animal Services

I've been closely following Los Angeles Animal Services for the past 15 years. I used to go to all the commission meetings. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa wanted to appoint me as a commissioner but I declined because of the nasty activists.

For almost ten years straight Animal Defense League (ADL) run by actress Pamelyn Ferdin and her husband Dr Jerry Vlasak the spokesperson for the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) protested Los Angeles Animal Services. They would demand a new General Manager by protesting at the Mayor's house, Mayoral house, Mayor's sister's house, ex-wife of Deputy of Animal Services... That is how we got Don Knapp, Jerry Greenwalt, Guerdon Stuckey, Edward Boks and now Brenda Barnette.

What's very interesting is during all that time the euth numbers went down steadily. The numbers have been going down steadily since the 1970's with or without protesters. Euth and intake went up a little after Boks left before they hired a new GM. That is because Boks fudged the books, juggled the numbers and refused the animals most likely to be euth'd. Those same animals were also animals most likely to procreate. Boks refused feral cats, kittens and large dogs which increased in numbers as they were dumped on the streets. This was also the time of the real estate bust where people lost their homes and relinquished their pets in droves.

Brenda Barnette was hired after a long and exhausting search for a new GM. The search was long and exhausting as few people who were capable of the job wanted it. There were some local animal activists who'd never run a shelter before who wanted the job. There were also people in the department who wanted to run the shelter. Choosing someone from local animal activism rescue or current department employee would not have been the best idea for many reasons. Some local rescuers and some in the department have been at each other for years. An outsider made the most sense. Most outsiders were not interested in the position because they knew they'd be viciously attacked and their career, life destroyed by ADL and ALF. Then along came Brenda Barnette.

Barnette had years of experience running shelters and an SPCA. The only negative was that she and her daughter once owned and bred dogs for show I believe. Any animal lover should only adopt animals and spayneuter any animals they own. Considering the lack of experience, lack of knowledge, tons of baggage and legal liability of past GMs this was a non-issue for me. None of us started our careers with all the knowledge and wisdom we have today.

Barnette continued with all the positive programs of the past and added new programs. She worked with Best Friends, Fix LA, Found Animals Foundation and others. She had to weather through the years as Los Angeles crawled out of the great recession. People lost their homes, had to double up with friends or rent places which would not accept pets. Many animals were relinquished at the shelters. This caused a large increase in intake. The increase in intake caused an increase in euthanasia.

This actually started during Ed Boks' last years but he covered it up by just plain refusing animals. Boks was not allowed to refuse animals as LAAS is a public open intake facility. Boks had no problem breaking the law while he was GM. His fudging of the books before Barnette caused the increase in intake to appear larger in comparison after Barnette because he'd kept it artificially low. Barnette had to deal with the past fudged books, a horrible economy and getting up to speed with the many problems facing LA Animal Services.

I will now take a look at the most recent cat/dog numbers I found on the Department website. They are linked below for this month June 2015. This file changes monthly so save it.

http://www.laanimalservices.com/pdf/reports/CatNDogIntakeNOutcomes.pdf

Intake is down considerably. Adoptions, Best Friends, New Hope are about the same. Returned to owners is up. Died is down. DOA is the same. Euthanasia is down by a large amount. It's down 25% from 2013 to 2014. It's down even further so far this year but we have one more month to go in the charts.

My question here is why are activists demanding that the Mayor fire Brenda Barnette? Just because she used to breed dogs? I would not care if she was a backyard dragon breeder if she can get the euthanasia rate to as low as it is today. Barnette has made great progress by the numbers. I think this call for Barnette's head is caused by a few unhappy employees and rescuers who have banded together in this attack.

p.s. The LAAS wildlife numbers have not been that good in the last few years because of a major distemper outbreak, the drought causing more animals to be ill and orphaned and we've lost a few rehabbers around LA City who used to take from the shelter. It's also my fault because I injured my back and can't take in as many wild animals. I used to take all mammals from a few shelters but I can't now until I have surgery. I will say that Barnette reached out to me to improve the wildlife numbers. We shared some ideas and she offered help. I was just not well enough to help. As soon as I have surgery and raised funds for our non-profit I will get back to taking in more wildlife.

I just posted the below on Facebook.

First off no one ever said that Los Angeles Animal Services is "No Kill." They obviously are killing just like Los Angeles County and Pasadena which have higher euth rates than LA City. "No kill" means all adoptable animals are adopted. Very ill, very injured, neonates with no mother or bottle feeders and very aggressive animals are euthanized. I will start with most important numbers first, Intake and Euthanasia.

Intake: Decrease in intake shows mandatory, free and low cost spayneuter of shelter and owned animals is working. People are also not dumping their pets because of the economy. This again is only for cats, dogs.
YEAR     #CATS/DOGS
2012/13  54,825
2013/14  50,239 -8% from previous year
2014/15  44,734 -9% from previous year at this rate

Euthanized: Euthanasia is down because intake is down, adoption, New Hope, Best Friend are the same and returned to owner is up.

2011/2012  21,620  37% euth rate (euth/intake)
2012/2013  17,069  -21% from previous year, 31% euth rate
2013/2014  12,683  -25% from previous year, 25% euth rate
2014/2015  11,579  at this rate -9% from previous year, 23% euth rate

Returned to Owner: RTO is up because all shelter adopted pets are microchipped, so are rescue animals and the economy has improved. Before owners would be called but they didn't want their cat or dog.

2012/2013  4,671
2013/2014  4,732  +1%
2014/2015  5,300  +12% at this rate

Adoptions: Same
Best Friends: Same
New Hope: Same
Released: Same
Died: Same
Dead On Arrival: Same
Stolen: Neglegible
Escaped: Neglegible

Here's a link to an article I wrote February 14, 2011 about Barnette's first six months.

Ed Boks, Edward Boks, Edward Albert Boks drunk driving DUI DWI alcoholic in Prescott, Arizona Yavapai Humane

When Ed Boks lived here in Los Angeles, California he drove drunk all the time. He drove Los Angeles City cars when he was drunk. He told me he drove home quite a few times and didn't remember driving home.

Here he is again driving drunk on the wrong side of the road. That is super drunk. He could have easily killed someone in a head on collision. Was he driving a Yavapai Humane car?

An article about my lawsuit against him. Guess what? Lots of alcohol and alcoholic behavior was involved. His wife Adele Langdon also is a major alcoholic. Guess what they both have in common? They've both been popped for drunk driving. What's even more revolting is that Ed Boks and Adele Langdon who claim to be animal lovers support a woman who committed animal cruelty. In turn that woman supports Ed Boks and Adele Langdon even though they both have DUIs and could have killed people. A bunch of twisted individuals.

Below is Adele's mugshot.

Adele C Martin aka Adele M Langdon aka Adele Boks who is on her third husband and is a real estate agent in California even though she supposedly lives in Arizona? Her birthday is November 6, 1953. Her first husband was Martin, second was Langdon and third is Boks.

When Ed Boks and Adele Langdon lived in Los Angeles, California they had a problem with drinking and driving. Adele M Langdon was arrested and booked for DUI in 2002. She was found GUILTY and CONVICTED. She should have lost her real estate license at this time. You can't have a DUI because the DRE assumes you will drive clients to see homes. Below is her booking information which I found at lasuperiorcourt.org and on the Internet.

People have said many things about Ed Boks and Adele Langdon on the Internet. You can search and see those comments yourself. I will be posting the facts about these two people who have been attacking me. Ed Boks attacks me because I sued him for sexual harassment and won a settlement. Adele attacks me because she is jealous. Ed Boks asked me out many times. Drunk one night he even asked me to marry him in a phone message and email. Ed Boks didn't even know me. We never even had dinner. Even after he proposes to Adele and she moves in with him he still asks me out!
