How to safely help dying baby sea lions - Mary Cummins Animal Advocates Los Angeles California

Starving dying baby sea lion Los Angeles, California Mary Cummins Animal Advocates
You've all heard about all the baby sea lions dying on the beach. There is no more room to rescue them. They are rescuing the ones with the highest chance of survival and leaving the rest on the beach to die. They are also leaving all adults no matter what at the moment.

Some assholes are throwing rocks at, kicking, taking their pics with the dying animals. Others are trying to rescue, give water, feed them. All of these things are bad for the sea lions and illegal. They are too weak to eat or drink. They can also bite especially the adults.

There is something you can do to make the last hours of the baby sea lions' lives more peaceful. Get some stakes, caution tape and print out the marine mammal warning sign below. Place four stakes in a square about ten feet apart around the baby sea lion (don't get near adults as they are too dangerous). Tie caution tape near the top of the stakes so baby can move if he wants to but people can still easily see the caution tape. Staple a print out of the marine mammal warning sign on one stake.

Stay on the beach and guard the sea lions. Have your video camera handy in case people try to harass or harm the sea lions. If you see someone harassing them and you believe it's safe for you to approach the person, tell them it's a crime to harass marine mammals with fines of $10,000 per incident. Here is some information about enforcing the Marine Mammal Protection Act. http://www.elephantseal.org/fordocents/Docent%20Handbook%202014/Tab%204-3%20Marine%20Mammal%20Harrassment-statement.pdf

When people approach use the opportunity to talk about the sea lion crisis. It's caused by change in ocean temperatures which is causing the fish they eat to move farther off shore. Mothers have travel longer distances to get food then they have to come back to the islands to feed their young. Mothers and babies are starving and end up being pulled by the currents and washed onto the shore to die.

Remember, always remove all your stakes, tape and signs when you leave the beach. Reuse the stakes, tape and signs. Wear a hat, use sunblock, bring your own water in a reusable bottle.

Supplies:

  • 25-Pack 36-in Wood Landscape Stakes $13
  • Couple rolls of caution tape 3" x 1,000' $3.99
  • 20 8"x11" printed out Marine Mammal warning signs

Do not get near adult sea lions. They are too dangerous even in their dimished condition. If you see someone getting near an adult, warn them and quote the law. Thanks.

Donate to Baby Warm for an incubator for Animal Advocates - Mary Cummins, Los Angeles

Baby Warm, incubator, Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, donate, Los Angeles, California
Like so many rehabbers, Mary started helping animals when she couldn't find anybody to help some orphaned babies.  She now cares for everything from squirrels, raccoons, opossums, voles, moles, gophers, birds to larger animals like bobcats, coyotes and the occasional fox.  Her incubator will be used for tiny orphaned babies - skunks, raccoons, opossums and bats. In between caring for animals, Mary also answers wildlife questions from around the world and does all she can to share her passion for wildlife with animal lovers everywhere.

Donate here!

Stop the Holley Fire Department "Squirrel Slam" squirrel hunting contest - Animal Advocates

Every year the Holley Fire Department has a squirrel hunting contest called the "Squirrel Slam." Money is raised to support the fire department. The hunt is open to kids and adults to come and kill squirrels. Prizes are given for heaviest squirrels killed. Encouraging kids and adults to kill animals to raise money for charity sets a very bad example. Please, have a non-violent activity to raise funds.

February 21, 2015 Saturday is this year's event date. Yesterday someone filed an injunction to hopefully stop the hunt. The motion will be heard tomorrow Thursday the 19th of February. I will post the hearing outcome. I don't feel too confident with the motion as they are claiming an Environment Review must be done for the hunting contest.

Call to action: Please, call the fire department's non-emergency number and politely ask them to stop the "Squirrel Slam" and have a non-violent fundraiser instead. If they don't pick up, leave a polite message  at 585-638-6884. Here is the city website. Email, call, fax a polite message http://www.villageofholley.org/ 585-638-6367 (direct), 585-638-7540 (fax).

The shut down their fire department website this year. Facebook page to stop the hunting contest https://www.facebook.com/pages/STOP-Squirrel-Slam-in-Holley-NY/183371988453687

Just when I think I've seen it all, raccoons being sold as food in Los Angeles - Animal Advocates

Raccoons for sale as food, Chinese market, Temple City, California, Los Angeles, Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates
UPDATE: 02/14/2015: Supposedly the raccoons came from a wholesaler in Florida. More than one market was selling the raccoons. One market sold it for $22/lb. Investigation is ongoing.

http://www.sgvtribune.com/health/20150212/frozen-raccoon-at-temple-city-market-may-have-come-from-florida-officials-say

Metro Supermarket located at 4819 Temple City Boulevard, Temple City, CA 91780 (626) 872-6955 is selling dead raccoons in a bag for $54 or $9.99/pound. They have been selling it for years they state. Authorities trying to figure out if it's legal. It might be legal if the source is legal. From a common sense point of view raccoon is the last meat you should eat. Every raccoon we've taken into rescue has had round worms which can be fatal to humans. You can't destroy it by just cooking it. They are also a Rabies Vector Species. This means they are more likely to have rabies though not all have rabies. Our main rabies vector animal here in LA is bats.

Supposedly raccoons are a "delicacy" in China which is odd as they are not native to Chine and have no raccoons there. I think some guy just told people it cures impotence or something to make money off gullible people. Turns out raccoon dogs which are not raccoons are native to Asia. They are called tanookis. Maybe they think they are raccoon dogs which we don't have here. Here is the original video from Christina Dow. In the video you see what looks like some large animals entire paw wrapped up. Here is the website for the market in English.   http://metrosupermarket.net/en/

About the supermarket. "Interunited Investment (USA) Corp.has established on October, 2011 in Los Angeles, California U.S.A. This company is a sister company of Hunan Interunited Investment Co. Ltd. Interunited Investment (USA) Corp. has invested and been operating Metro Supermarket, Metro Farm, and International Import and Export company."

Raccoon meat is legal to sell if it's legally procured and presented. This company sells raccoon meat. The small size one is a juvie raccoon. They should have USDA stamps. I think they sell them whole as there is no butcher who wants to dress them, i.e. skin, gut, cut up...

http://www.exoticmeatmarkets.com/raccoonmeat.html

Here is the bar code from the package 230500 754350. The "2" means it's meat that was weighed and wrapped in the store. The "5435" is the price. The "0" verifies the price. Still trying to figure out the "30500." That should be the type of meat.

Nathan Winograd admits he is just an "author." Perhaps he should clarify that as "fiction author."

Nathan Winograd, author, nokill, consultant, slow hill, inhumane, liar, attack, defamation
Finally Nathan Winograd shows his true colors. He admits he is merely an "author." He doesn't state he's a nokill consultant anymore as that business went under years ago. He also is not a shelter director. All he does is write fiction. 99% of what he writes is hate speech and defamation against HSUS, PETA, ASPCA....

While he lists he's an author he still has a non-profit No Kill Law and Advocacy. He asks people to donate to that organization. What does that organization do? It pays Nathan an annual salary. It also pays for office expenses, internet, travel.... He does do one event a year where he charges people to listen to his hate speech. At the event he tries to sell his book. In fact he went on a book tour that was paid for by his non-profit. The tour coincided with him speaking in some small rooms wherever he was.

The nonprofit also paid to make a movie about himself. He used donations to make a "documentary" about himself being the "originator of nokill."

He just paid for this ad and website against PETA. He bought this domain name. It's listed as his. Donations well spent?

Nathan Winograd, whypetakills, fraud, liar, nokill,
Why does Nathan Winograd hate PETA, HSUS, ASPCA, Best Friends....? He's jealous of their money, huge donations. He gets $5, $10 there from little old cat ladies. The big groups get major donations from major companies. No big sane group would give him a penny except the meat, fur, dairy industries.

NoKillLaw $300,000
HSUS $125,000,000
PETA $35,000,000
ASPCA $171,000,000
Best Friends $64,000,000

This is too much. Nathan is verifiable. He spent money to send out a press release asking Sam Simon to take back the money he is giving to PETA. His wife, family need to do an intervention with him. This is very crazy.
