Donate to Baby Warm for an incubator for Animal Advocates - Mary Cummins, Los Angeles

Baby Warm, incubator, Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, donate, Los Angeles, California
Like so many rehabbers, Mary started helping animals when she couldn't find anybody to help some orphaned babies.  She now cares for everything from squirrels, raccoons, opossums, voles, moles, gophers, birds to larger animals like bobcats, coyotes and the occasional fox.  Her incubator will be used for tiny orphaned babies - skunks, raccoons, opossums and bats. In between caring for animals, Mary also answers wildlife questions from around the world and does all she can to share her passion for wildlife with animal lovers everywhere.

Stop the Holley Fire Department "Squirrel Slam" squirrel hunting contest - Animal Advocates

Every year the Holley Fire Department has a squirrel hunting contest called the "Squirrel Slam." Money is raised to support the fire department. The hunt is open to kids and adults to come and kill squirrels. Prizes are given for heaviest squirrels killed. Encouraging kids and adults to kill animals to raise money for charity sets a very bad example. Please, have a non-violent activity to raise funds.

February 21, 2015 Saturday is this year's event date. Yesterday someone filed an injunction to hopefully stop the hunt. The motion will be heard tomorrow Thursday the 19th of February. I will post the hearing outcome. I don't feel too confident with the motion as they are claiming an Environment Review must be done for the hunting contest.

Call to action: Please, call the fire department's non-emergency number and politely ask them to stop the "Squirrel Slam" and have a non-violent fundraiser instead. If they don't pick up, leave a polite message  at 585-638-6884. Here is the city website. Email, call, fax a polite message http://www.villageofholley.org/ 585-638-6367 (direct), 585-638-7540 (fax).

The shut down their fire department website this year. Facebook page to stop the hunting contest https://www.facebook.com/pages/STOP-Squirrel-Slam-in-Holley-NY/183371988453687

Just when I think I've seen it all, raccoons being sold as food in Los Angeles - Animal Advocates

Raccoons for sale as food, Chinese market, Temple City, California, Los Angeles, Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates
UPDATE: 02/14/2015: Supposedly the raccoons came from a wholesaler in Florida. More than one market was selling the raccoons. One market sold it for $22/lb. Investigation is ongoing.

http://www.sgvtribune.com/health/20150212/frozen-raccoon-at-temple-city-market-may-have-come-from-florida-officials-say

Metro Supermarket located at 4819 Temple City Boulevard, Temple City, CA 91780 (626) 872-6955 is selling dead raccoons in a bag for $54 or $9.99/pound. They have been selling it for years they state. Authorities trying to figure out if it's legal. It might be legal if the source is legal. From a common sense point of view raccoon is the last meat you should eat. Every raccoon we've taken into rescue has had round worms which can be fatal to humans. You can't destroy it by just cooking it. They are also a Rabies Vector Species. This means they are more likely to have rabies though not all have rabies. Our main rabies vector animal here in LA is bats.

Supposedly raccoons are a "delicacy" in China which is odd as they are not native to Chine and have no raccoons there. I think some guy just told people it cures impotence or something to make money off gullible people. Turns out raccoon dogs which are not raccoons are native to Asia. They are called tanookis. Maybe they think they are raccoon dogs which we don't have here. Here is the original video from Christina Dow. In the video you see what looks like some large animals entire paw wrapped up. Here is the website for the market in English.   http://metrosupermarket.net/en/

About the supermarket. "Interunited Investment (USA) Corp.has established on October, 2011 in Los Angeles, California U.S.A. This company is a sister company of Hunan Interunited Investment Co. Ltd. Interunited Investment (USA) Corp. has invested and been operating Metro Supermarket, Metro Farm, and International Import and Export company."

Raccoon meat is legal to sell if it's legally procured and presented. This company sells raccoon meat. The small size one is a juvie raccoon. They should have USDA stamps. I think they sell them whole as there is no butcher who wants to dress them, i.e. skin, gut, cut up...

http://www.exoticmeatmarkets.com/raccoonmeat.html

Here is the bar code from the package 230500 754350. The "2" means it's meat that was weighed and wrapped in the store. The "5435" is the price. The "0" verifies the price. Still trying to figure out the "30500." That should be the type of meat.

Nathan Winograd admits he is just an "author." Perhaps he should clarify that as "fiction author."

Nathan Winograd, author, nokill, consultant, slow hill, inhumane, liar, attack, defamation
Finally Nathan Winograd shows his true colors. He admits he is merely an "author." He doesn't state he's a nokill consultant anymore as that business went under years ago. He also is not a shelter director. All he does is write fiction. 99% of what he writes is hate speech and defamation against HSUS, PETA, ASPCA....

While he lists he's an author he still has a non-profit No Kill Law and Advocacy. He asks people to donate to that organization. What does that organization do? It pays Nathan an annual salary. It also pays for office expenses, internet, travel.... He does do one event a year where he charges people to listen to his hate speech. At the event he tries to sell his book. In fact he went on a book tour that was paid for by his non-profit. The tour coincided with him speaking in some small rooms wherever he was.

The nonprofit also paid to make a movie about himself. He used donations to make a "documentary" about himself being the "originator of nokill."

He just paid for this ad and website against PETA. He bought this domain name. It's listed as his. Donations well spent?

Nathan Winograd, whypetakills, fraud, liar, nokill,
Why does Nathan Winograd hate PETA, HSUS, ASPCA, Best Friends....? He's jealous of their money, huge donations. He gets $5, $10 there from little old cat ladies. The big groups get major donations from major companies. No big sane group would give him a penny except the meat, fur, dairy industries.

NoKillLaw $300,000
HSUS $125,000,000
PETA $35,000,000
ASPCA $171,000,000
Best Friends $64,000,000

This is too much. Nathan is verifiable. He spent money to send out a press release asking Sam Simon to take back the money he is giving to PETA. His wife, family need to do an intervention with him. This is very crazy.

Help stop inhumane carousel pony rides in Santa Monica - Sign and Share!

Pony ride, carousel pony rides, Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, Tawni Angel, Santa Monica, California, Tawnis ponies and petting zoo
Tawni's Ponies and Petting Zoo operates a carousel pony ride in Santa Monica's Farmers Market. Six ponies are tied to a metal carousel nose to butt. The ponies are forced to walk round and round on cement for hours a day. Most animal rights groups believe this is inhumane. Quite a few cities and states have banned carousel pony rides such as Pamploma, Spain; Miami Shores, Florida; Hollywood, Florida... The World Equine Organization has called for a complete ban of carousel pony rides. Here is what the main groups have to say about pony rides. Please, sign the petition below to end this practice.

From the ASPCA: "The ASPCA is opposed to the cruelty that is inherent in using either wild animals or livestock in unaccredited zoos, roadside menageries, petting zoos, game farms and the like, and in attractions such as elephant rides, camel rides, and llama and pony rides that either stand alone or are attached to such venues."

From HSUS: "The Humane Society considers the sale, the handling of the ponies during the sale, the pony rides and the transport to the sold ponies' new homes stressful and cruel to the animals."

From PETA: "Pony Rides: Tethered tightly to turnstiles and forced to plod in endless circles, ponies can suffer from hoof ailments and are often left sore and chafed from ill-fitting equipment. Equines are specifically excluded from protection under the federal Animal Welfare Act, and if local or state athorities fail to intervene, the outcome can be deadly."

From PETA about petting zoos: "The animals used in petting zoos are hauled around in tractor-trailers, confined to small pens and cages, and forced to interact with large crowds of people. The animals are rarely allowed to rest when on display, and they often develop health problems from this forced interaction."

From Green Mountain Animal Defenders: "Green Mountain Animal Defenders opposes the use of animals in any form of sport in which animals have no choice but to participate. Ponies used in pony rides are tethered to a carousel or cart and forced to carry passengers for hours. This leads to hoof problems and other ailments. The ponies are generally sent for slaughter or otherwise discarded when no longer profitable."

From Pamploma, Spain: Spanish municipality of Pamploma approved a motion with the unanimous support of almost all councilors to prohibit the use of pony drawn carousels in 2014. President of AnimaNaturalis Aida Gascon, an animal rights organization in Spain, said “We welcome this news, because it shows that if society is informed and unites we can get a ban on activities involving animal abuse. Carousels with ponies are an outdated attraction that cause stress and suffering to the animals due to the noise and bustle of the fairs. In addition, they undergo mental and physical exhaustion caused by endless circling, and are also exposed to environmental conditions that can be extremely harsh.”

Please, sign and share this petition for the ponies.

Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates get amendment to zoning to allow wildlife rehabilitation, llamas, alpacas

Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, zoning, amendment, los angeles, county, california
I worked for two years to get an amendment to zoning to allow wildlife rehabilitation in LA County. Some people wanted to add llamas and alpacas as farm animals while we were at it. It was covered by all the newspapers. Below is the actual amendment.

WILD CRITTERS NO MORE LLAMAS, ALPACAS NOW ARE FARM ANIMALS.(News)

Daily News (Los Angeles, CA)

Llamas and alpacas are now officially livestock instead of ``wild animals'' in Los Angeles County, legitimizing their breeding in rural areas of the Antelope Valley and elsewhere in Los Angeles County.

The change came about in part because of an Antelope Valley couple who wanted to raise alpacas but found that the county classification of the South American mammal as a wild animal prohibited them on their agriculturally zoned property.

``We listed them as wild animals in the county code. The state does not list them like that,'' county planner Leonard Erlanger said. ``We took them off and are treating them like horses and cows. …

County relaxes restrictions on llamas, animal rehab
By Troy Anderson, Staff Writer
POSTED: 01/25/06, 12:01 AM PST | 0 COMMENTS

Los Angeles County officials gave animal lovers some good news Tuesday, making it legal to operate small wildlife rehabilitation facilities in unincorporated areas and easing rules for raising llamas and alpacas.

The practice of rehabilitating small wildlife had been illegal in unincorporated areas but legal in the city of Los Angeles.

"I'm ecstatic," said Mary Cummins, president of the nonprofit animal rescue organization Animal Advocates, which has a wildlife permit to operate in the city. "This amendment will help protect the public and save animals."

Cummins said about 50 people and organizations have been illegally rehabilitating thousands of wild animals each year in the county.

Last year, wild animal rehabilitators saved more than 80,000 animals statewide, including bobcats, skunks, opossums, racoons, wild mice and pack rats, Cummins said.

The new ordinance approved by the Board of Supervisors will allow facilities to temporarily care for sick or injured small wild animals until they become healthy and can be put back in their native habitat, said Department of Regional Planning Ordinance Studies Section official Leonard Erlanger.

The new ordinance also is expected to help relieve the county's overburdened animal shelters.

"We do occasionally get opossums," said Brenda Sanchez, spokeswoman for the county Department of Animal Care and Control. "A lot them are either trapped by residents in the area or injured and we have to euthanize them."

The state Department of Fish and Game requires all licensed wildlife rehabilitation facilities to show they have zoning clearances before it will grant a wildlife rehabilitation permit.

Before Tuesday's vote, the county did not have a mechanism to provide such clearances.

Under the new ordinance, people seeking to operate such a facility will need to obtain a state permit for the animals. Under the new requirements, the animals also must be indigenous to the county, weigh less than 30 pounds and cannot be dangerous, such as bears and mountain lions.

The provision also limits the number of animals in a facility to 20, but that limit could be waived under some circumstances.

The supervisors also voted to make it easier for people to raise llamas and alpacas in unincorporated areas.

Currently, the county's zoning laws refer to alpacas and llamas as wild animals and prohibits them in light agricultural areas - which essentially precludes Antelope Valley residents from raising the animals.

The new ordinance allows the animals in light agricultural areas and classifies them as pets that can be kept in residentially zoned areas - just like horses, cattle, sheep and goats.

PRWeb: Los Angeles County to allow licensed wildlife rehabilitation

Today the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles approved an amendment to Planning and Zoning which would allow for the licensed rehabilitation of small wild animals in the County. Currently the California Department of Fish & Game permits licensed wildlife rehabilitators to treat ill, injured and orphaned wildlife for release back to the wild. Their permits are only valid if their work does not conflict with any other regulations or ordinances.

Mary Cummins President of Animal Advocates had been working on this amendment for over two years with Alyson Stewart and Leonard Erlanger of the Department of Regional Planning. "I am very grateful that the County of Los Angeles will now allow the licensed rehabilitation of small wild animals," stated Cummins. "This will allow us to have rehabbers in the County where they are so desperately needed."

Wildlife rehabilitators provide an essential service to the public and wildlife. Without rehabbers sometimes well meaning members of the public try to care for the animals themselves which can pose a danger to the person and animal. It is actually illegal for anyone to keep a wild animal over 48 hours without a permit. Rehabbers also pick up wildlife from local animal shelters besides providing public education about wildlife and humane wildlife control.

Currently Animal Advocates rehabilitates small wildlife such as bobcats, raccoons, skunks, opossums, squirrels and chipmunks rehabbing over 1,300 wild animals in 2005. In 2004 over 80,000 wild animals were rescued in California by state wildlife rehabilitators. Wildlife rehabilitators provide this service free of charge and most are 501 3c corporations such as Animal Advocates.

15 SUP. ANTONOVICH, MAYOR: OKAY. MARY CUMMINS. MARY? JUST GIVE
16 YOUR NAME FOR THE RECORD.
17
18 MARY CUMMINS: I'M MARY CUMMINS, PRESIDENT OF ANIMAL ADVOCATES.
19 I'M A FISH AND GAME LICENSED WILDLIFE REHABILITATOR, EDUCATOR
20 AND EXHIBITER. I'D LIKE TO THANK THE PLANNING COMMISSION,
21 ESPECIALLY LEONARD AND ALLISON, FOR ALL THE HARD WORK IN
22 GETTING THIS AMENDMENT THIS FAR. THIS AMENDMENT WILL HELP
23 PROTECT THE PUBLIC AND SAVE ANIMALS. SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY,
24 MINIMUM LOT SIZES AND MAXIMUM ANIMAL COUNTS WERE ADDED TO THE
25 PROPOSED AMENDMENT. NOW, IF YOU'RE TALKING LLAMAS AND ALPACAS,
1 LARGE ANIMALS, THAT MAKES SENSE BUT THIS AMENDMENT IS JUST FOR
2 SMALL MAMMALS, JUST SMALL SUCH AS SQUIRRELS AND OPOSSUMS. NOW,
3 A BABY SQUIRREL IS ABOUT AN INCH LONG AND I CAN FIT 20 BABY
4 OPOSSUMS INTO A TEASPOON. I LIVE ON AN AVERAGE LOT WHICH IS
5 6,500 SQUARE FEET. I'D ONLY BE ABLE TO HAVE FIVE WILD ANIMALS,
6 MAXIMUM. NOW, LEGALLY, FIVE BABY SQUIRRELS MUST BE KEPT IN AN
7 INCUBATOR, WHICH IS A TUPPERWARE CONTAINER ABOUT 10 GALLONS. I
8 DON'T THINK I NEED A 6,500-SQUARE-FOOT LOT TO HAVE A 10-GALLON
9 TUPPERWARE CONTAINER IN MY HOUSE. AND I'M IN THE CITY OF L.A.,
10 FORTUNATELY. I CAN HAVE AS MANY WILD ANIMALS AS I CAN LEGALLY
11 HOUSE. CURRENTLY, THE FISH AND GAME AND U.S.D.A. ANIMAL
12 WELFARE REGULATIONS SEVERELY RESTRICT THE NUMBER OF ANIMALS
13 THAT WE MAY HAVE. THEY HAVE MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM CAGING SIZES,
14 WHICH GO DOWN TO THE CUBIC INCH AND WE ARE ALREADY HEAVILY
15 RESTRICTED AND I DON'T FEEL THAT THE MINIMUM LOT SIZE AND
16 MAXIMUM NUMBERS ARE NECESSARY. I'D LIKE TO ASK THAT THAT WOULD
17 BE REMOVED FROM THE REQUIREMENTS. I WAS JUST SPEAKING WITH
18 SOMEONE EARLIER OVER HERE AND HE STATED THAT THEY MIGHT BE
19 ABLE TO FIND A WAY AROUND THAT AND THAT WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE TO
20 ME IF THAT WOULD BE APPROVED.
