Bill to ban debarking of cats and dogs to be voted upon in New York - Animal Advocates, Mary Cummins

New York assembly agriculture committee debark cats, dogs - Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

This passed the assembly vote March 24, 2015 147/0 unanimous. It now goes before the New York Assembly Agriculture Committee. I'm trying to track it down and will post and update as an action alert. They meet Tuesdays are 9:00 a.m. New York time. It's not on any agenda yet. I'll keep checking. Here are members of the committee to politely contact. Tell them to vote yes on 1679 to ban debarking. Got another minute to protect dogs and cats? Ask your veterinarian for a letter supporting A1679 and be sure to get a copy! Urge him or her to take a humane stand for animals as more than 200 Massachusetts vets did by endorsing that devocalization ban. Surgery used to stifle a dog’s or cat’s voice is animal cruelty. The vets to whom we entrust our best friends should never sanction that.

Fast Facts About Devocalization

Devocalization can cause lifelong suffering or horrific death by choking or heat stroke.
The risk of infection is greater for devocalization than for other surgical procedures.
Complications are common regardless of the vet's skill, the instrument used - even laser - and whether vocal cords are cut through the oral cavity or an incision in the neck.
In fact, the less-invasive procedure has a higher risk of internal scarring that may obstruct the airway and impair swallowing and breathing.
Surgery to correct airway obstruction following devocalization is very costly - and may need to be repeated, subjecting animals to increased risks and their guardians to expenses they may not be able or willing to fund.
Devocalized animals are given up just like any other dog or cat, such as when no longer useful for breeding or exhibition. This convenience surgery exposes them to great risks without any benefit.
Some breeders have sold animals without disclosing they were devocalized, leaving the new families to face great expense or the suffering and death of their beloved companion.
Devocalization is more common than most people think, primarily among those who use animals for profit or hobby, when they or neighbors don’t want to hear their animals or to keep show dogs quiet in the ring or in transit between shows. Unlike cut ears and tails, cut vocal cords are not visible, so most people assume these animals' raspy voices or labored breathing are the result of an illness. Who would imagine someone had their vocal cords cut?
Cats are devocalized too, though less often than dogs.

TITLE OF BILL:  An act to amend the agriculture and markets law, in
relation to restricting the performance of surgical devocalization
procedures on dogs and cats

PURPOSE OF THE BILL: This bill will prohibit the devocalization of
dogs and cats unless there is a medical condition that requires the
procedure.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section one of the bill creates section 365-a
in the agriculture and markets law that prohibits the devocalization
of cats and dogs unless medically necessary.

Section two of the bill relates to forfeiture of animals.

Section three of the bill authorizes the commissioner of agriculture
and markets and the commissioner of education to promulgate rules and
regulations to enforce this section.

JUSTIFICATION: The devocalization of animals is an invasive procedure
that involves the surgical removal of a dog or cat's vocal cords.
This procedure often leads to serious and long term respiratory and
throat ailments. It silences the dog or cat and prevents communication
between other animals and their owners.

This bill will outlaw "convenience" devocalization and restrict the
invasive surgery for cases where it is medically necessary to treat or
relieve an illness or injury.

Sam Simon passed away yesterday at his home, June 6, 1955 - March 8, 2015

Sam Simon "(June 6, 1955 - March 8, 2015) was an American director, producer, writer, boxing manager and philanthropist. While at Stanford University, Simon worked as a newspaper cartoonist and after graduating became a storyboard artist at Filmation Studios. He submitted a spec script for the sitcom Taxi, which was produced, and later became the series' showrunner. Over the next few years, Simon wrote and produced for Cheers, It's Garry Shandling's Show and other programs, as well as writing the 1991 film The Super."

Sam grew up in Beverly Hills and went to Beverly Hills High School. He is ten years older than me so he was the class of 1973. I was 1983. Below are some pics from the yearbook and alumni guide. Photoshopped image of hanging dog statue is fake - Animal Advocates, Mary Cummins, galguero

Since 2009 this image has been used in petitions, hate pages all over the Internet in every language to attack racers, hunters, dog fighters, dog eaters, dog abusers.... I received it saying it was a statue honoring dog hunting in Spain. Then they asked people to sign a stupid petition to "outlaw dog hunting in spain." I'm Spanish. We don't hunt dogs. I think petition sites do this to stir people up so they'll sign their worthless petitions so they can get and sell your email address. It is clearly fake and photoshopped. I post the real image below it.

Here is the story in Spanish. A person saw the statue honoring those who hunt with dogs. They were upset and made a shitty photoshop to show what they felt that people who hunt with dogs actually do.

Galgueros are people who own greyhounds. Originally they were used to hunt food. Later they were used to hunt hares as a competition. Even later they were used to race which is why they have a fake hare as a lure in front of the dogs to get them to go around the track. That said some people who used dogs to hunt did hang their dogs when they were no longer useful. This is not something all dog racers or people who hunt with dogs do. They said hanging was less painful to the dog than shooting them. I'm obviously against anyone using animals and discarding them in this manner. I feel cats, dogs are pets which should be cherished. Wild animals should live in the wild.

Please, do some research before you forward things like this. With image recognition software I found the real image and story within 30 seconds. One person even said this was a statute or honor a Korean man who hunts dogs for food. This is insulting to so many people in so many ways. Snopes.

Preface: I'm not against pitbulls. I don't want them all killed. I'm not calling for making ownership of pits illegal. I fostered a pit. I am just asking people to look at the data, research, facts and make an informed decision about which breed of dog is best for you, your family and the public.

Then there are those who are for BSL and outlawing any dangerous dog regardless of breed. http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics.php

HSUS states we have no statistics which show that one breed is more dangerous, more likely to bite or injure than another. That is not true. Independent insurance companies, the US post office, trauma surgeons, animal experts...have indeed done research backed with data, see above link. This research shows that pitbulls are the most likely breed to cause severe mauling and/or death. While chihuahuas are more likely to bite, pits are more likely to kill you if they bite. They also don't show any pre-bite warnings. They seem to bite, attack out of the blue. When they bite, they don't stop. They try to go for the jugular, head and face which is a clear attempt at trying to kill the victim.

HSUS states that dogs just need proper training, neutering, treatment...in order to not bite. I have seen quite a few pitbull attacks. They seem to come out of the blue from healthy, happy, well cared for homes. They attack for no reason. I fostered a pit, took the pitbull classes in LA and trained my dog. I wanted to take all precautions so he would never harm any animal or human. He never did during his entire life as far as I know. I've also seen quite a few videos of attacks. Again, some attack for no reason and refuse to let go of the victim. I've seen the injuries to humans and other dogs.

Note that I said "some." I didn't say all. I don't think that every pitbull will kill someone. That is ridiculous. I just believe based on data that if one is attacked by a pitbull, they are more likely to suffer catastrophic injury and/or death than if they were attacked by another non-molosser breed. This is similar to motorcycle verses car accidents. Motorcyclists are less likely to be involved in an accident but they are more likely to be injured in an accident for obvious reasons.

I am not calling for people to ban, kill pitbulls. I just want people to look at the data and reality of the situation. Make an informed decision about bringing one into your home or out on the street. Making up the false pro-pit propaganda makes matters worse. Pits were never nanny dogs. That is a myth. They were intentionally selectively bred for fighting from mastiffs, bulldogs and terriers. See link directly above for their history. They used to fight bears and bulls. When that was outlawed they trained the dogs to fight each other. They intentionally breed the strongest, fiercest dog that won't ever stop fighting, won't let go, can take a massive beating but still fight, won't warn that they will fight, will still fight if they see submissive posture from another dog or person....

Stop telling people pits are great with kids. Many people believed this and intentionally adopted a pit only to have it maul and kill their child. Read the articles in Voices of the Victims website linked below. These people were suckered in by the nanny dog myth. They paid for that with the life of their children and family. They clearly state this in the articles written in the first person by the victims' family members.

We already have breed specific legislation. It's illegal to own a wolf, coyote, fox, raccoon dog, jackal, dhole, painted dog... without proper permits and in proper secured enclosures where they cannot pose a danger to the public. They are illegal because governments have deemed them to be dangerous to humans. The government already stated some canines pose a threat to humans. Some are just plain illegal in some cities and/or states period. All dogs are in the canine family. If we already have BSL, why are dog owners saying that BSL is wrong? It's very hypocritical to be for and against BSL at the same time. If one can't own a wolf, why another breed with a similar history of fatal maulings? Currently in the US you are more likely to be killed by a pitbull than a wolf, coyote, fox... Wolves, coyotes, foxes, raccoon dogs were bred through natural selection to survive. That means through natural selection the wolves, coyotes, foxes who could find food, mate, stay away from predators...would breed and pass on those genes. They were not selectively bred to fight to the death and never stop fighting. That would make no sense in the wild. We humans selectively bred pitbulls to do very unnatural things such as fight to the death for no reason and never stop. We did this so we could gamble and make money on the fight outcome.

Another thing about the anti-BSL movement is that it is breed discrimination. If you are against banning pits, you are against people adopting other breeds of dogs. For each pit that gets adopted, another breed of dog dies in the shelter. That's okay? Again, I am not for making ownership of pitbulls illegal. I'm against any and all dogs, canines that pose a threat to humans. If I had a poodle that bit people, I'd muzzle it in public, get it training...do everything to prevent it from harming someone. When I fostered my pit I had him on a prong and slip collar with a strong leash. I never let him off leash ever except in the house with my cats locked in another room. I never let him get near kids or dogs without me right there holding him tight on his leash.

A last note, why adopt, buy a pitbull over all the other many breeds of dogs? I realize people do this so they can feel like a hero adopting the ugly, unwanted, "misunderstood" pitbull. Others do it to look macho and manly or to fight. I can't find one reason why someone would adopt this dog breed over all others. Why not a labrador, golden retriever, dalmation, german shepherd if you want a larger breed of dog? They are all loyal, sweet, playful... This is the point of my article. Why adopt, buy a pit over all other breeds of dog? I just want people to think about that. Look at the research and facts. Make an informed decision. Don't get a pit because someone said it'd be great with your baby. Get a dog based on your lifestyle, family, needs and wants. Don't adopt a pit just to feel like a savior. You're a savior if you adopt any dog or cat. It goes without saying don't get one to look macho or to fight.

In closing here I am with my foster pit Buddy. He was a great dog who never harmed anyone. Would I foster another pit? No, I would foster another breed from a shelter. It's just not worth the risk and worry. There is no reason why the pit breed is better than all the other breeds. I can also tell you that it took me a year to find him a home because of his breed. I could have saved five other dogs during that time. Five other dogs died because I chose to foster this one. I only chose to foster him because three people said they'd instantly adopt him if I went and picked him up. They all flaked.

UPDATE 03/17/2014: Good news! Toby of Leave No Paws Behind rescue has just agreed an hour ago not to give the dog back to the owners. Toby stated that she doesn't feel the traveling lifestyle would be good for Otto because of his age and health.

"All of that being said, and with Otto's best interest at heart, he will be remaining right here in our care and his humans agree."

In the meantime Christopher Gonzales took down his website and his church's Facebook group. I'm sure it's because that is where I found all the photos, videos and evidence which proves they are not sick, disabled, poor seniors who couldn't afford vet care. Toby is the one who released their names and profession to the public. She should not be mad at us for doing research and posting facts.

I just saw the original KTLA video with the phone conversation with Chris Gonzales. He lied about needing tires to try to garner sympathy and donations. Whenever he has car problems he posts on his page that he is praying for an "answer from God." Then one of his followers will PayPal him money then he thanks God for answering his prayer.

Earlier I posted about the dog that was left outside the Baldwin Park, California animal shelter with a sad note. The note said the dog was 13 years old, vomiting and had bloody diarrhea. The owners said they were elderly, sick and couldn't afford to take the dog to the vet or have him euthanized. They allowed him to have mange for three years and be almost bald. They asked the shelter to euthanize him. Instead the shelter called "Leave No Paws Behind" animal rescue. They took the dog to the vet and treated it. Then they decided to try to find the owner. I wrote the blog entry to help. Friends of the owners saw the dog in media articles and came forward.

Here is an article that brings you up to date. When the owners saw that people wanted to give them money they gladly came forward to claim it giving news reporters their PayPal email. The rescue group said they will give them back their dog when it's healthy. They will pay for the dogs veterinary care.

When I first read the note and saw the photo of the dog on Facebook I felt sorry for the dog and owners. The owners said they were both seniors, sick and poor. They said the dog was sick. Turns out that is not the case. We have ourselves some liars and con artists. ~~Please, donate to Leave No Paws Behind because they do wonderful work~~ but don't give anything to the owners of the dog. Do not PayPal them a penny. This is what I've found about them so far.

They are not senior citizens. They are not disabled. They are not poor. They are traveling ministers who give little talks then beg for money. They are not a legal church, corporation or non-profit. They make $60,000/year which they admitted to Manta. Manta gets the data from the owner of the business. The dog only had mites. He didn't have bloody diarrhea or vomiting. They left his mites untreated for three years. It's also a crime to dump an animal. They left it outside where anyone could have taken it and used it as dog fighting bait. California Codes. Penal Code. Part 1. Of Crimes and Punishments. Title 14. Malicious Mischief. § 597s. Abandonment of animals (a) Every person who willfully abandons any animal is guilty of a misdemeanor. Anyone who abandons an animal is subject to a $500 fine and/or up to six months in jail. Animal neglect is also a crime. Not providing veterinary care is animal neglect which is covered under 597.

Christopher Gonzales supposedly told Toby that his church is covered under another legal church organization. He would not tell anyone the name of that organization. I personally don't believe him because he lies so much.

Chris Gonzales is not a PhD. He cannot call himself a doctor. He cannot use "Dr." in his name because it's a supposedly honorary degree, i.e. he didn't do anything to get it. In fact this honorary degree may not even exist. Even though he's not a PhD, he calls himself "Dr. Chris Gonzales." Even in his Twitter account he calls himself a Dr. He mainly talks about watching TV, food and driving.

He likes to spit out mumbo jumbo made up words while doing so. He preys and prays on poor people who are sick who want him to bless and heal them. He obviously doesn't have the power to heal anyone. He invites people to meetings at Sizzler or the Old Country Buffet restaurants. People pay for their food, listen to him talk then he asks for money. He calls it a "love offering." Toby now says the wife is on disability.

I generally don't care about anyone's weight except my own. In this instance I will say something. Christopher Gonzales is morbidly obese. If he has any health problems, they are most likely caused by being so obese. Chris Gonzales likes to thump the bible and quote scripture. While I'm Catholic and don't currently go to church I did go to Catholic school for many years. Gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins. It is to consume to the point of waste. Lust is also a sin. Chris lusts for food and money based on his Facebook page. Chris Gonzales lied which is yet another sin. He is not a doctor yet tells people he is. He also lied in the note he left with his dog. The bible tells us that God created animals. The bible also tells us that we must treat His animals well. If we neglect animals, we are neglecting God. As a supposedly religious man how can he commit so much sin? I believe it's because he's a fraud, a charlatan.

I emailed this blog entry to Chris Gonzales at all his email addresses asking for comment. No reply. The emails did go through. I did not call him or threaten him or his family ever. I have no intention of doing so.

I see no photos of Chris or Christine with this dog online. If he was with then for 13 years going everywhere with them, why are there no photos? There are a ton of photos of Chris. If he loved this dog, there would be photos of him with the dog all over. I noticed that Christine doesn't have a Facebook page, does not talk in any of the videos. I have a feeling this may have been her dog. Chris might have gotten sick of it and told her to dump it. She sounded sorry in the interview. Again, why no photos of Christine with the dog? I think Chris probably did not like the dog, might have been jealous.

After I posted the truth about Chris Gonzales I have been personally attacked in retaliation. Every word here is 100% the truth backed by facts and evidence. Most of it came from Chris Gonzales' website or Facebook pages.

A 13-year-old dachshund left outside an animal shelter with a note asking that he be put to sleep because his elderly owners could no longer afford to care for him was expected to be reunited with the couple soon.

The dog, named “Harley” by rescuers, was found tied to a basket outside the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter on March 6, according to Toby Wisneski, CEO and founder of Leave No Paws Behind.

Attached to Harley was a note explaining that he had gotten sick, was vomiting and had bloody stools.

“We are both seniors, sick with no money. We cannot pay for vet bills, or to put him to sleep. He has never been away from us in all those years, he cannot function without us, please put him to sleep,” stated the note, which ended without identifying the owners.

Wisneski received a call from the shelter and took the dog in knowing if she didn’t he would be put to sleep.

After receiving medical care at the East Valley Veterinary Clinic, doctor’s told Wisneski that Harley was going to be OK and had a couple of years left in him.

Determined to reunite Harley with his owners, Wisneski tracked down the couple and found out Harley’s real name is Otto Wolfgang Maximus.

“We just are living week to week,” one of the owners, who wished to remain anonymous, said in a phone interview. “We can’t even go to the hospital to get our treatment.”

The couple was informed that Leave No Paws Behind — described on their Facebook page as a nonprofit, foster-based rescue — would cover Otto’s healthcare and food costs for the rest of his life.

“We thought he was dead, but he lives,” said the owner on the phone. “He’s being well taken care of and, boy, we’re just so extremely grateful.”

The couple was expected to be reunited with Otto when they return to the area on March 28."

Here is my Nathan Winograd timeline. Any additions or corrections would be appreciated. Feel free to share. I made this so I could investigate his claims of making shelters "no kill." So far he has not made any shelter no kill.

August 1, 1966 born in Los Angeles, California to Dolores Leila Nayar (born June 13, 1932 in Mexico) and Azriel Winograd Aizenberg (born May 15, 1921 in Ryki, Poland) married 1963 in Nevada, divorced October 1971 in Los Angeles, California when Nathan is five years old. One younger sister, one older. His father was a "sewing machine operator" as per his naturalization papers.
