Mary Cummins of Animal Advocates was in episode 108 of Animal Planet's series "Beverly Hills Vet." It was filmed at the home of Mary Cummins and Animal Advocates in Los Angeles, California and aired in 2003. The title of the episode is "Julianne's Choice, the Dog or the Baby" segment "Baby Squirrel Rescue."

The premise of the story is that Ken found an orphaned baby squirrel is his yard. He called veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren who is visiting Southern California from Australia. She comes over and checks out the baby. Then she calls licensed wildlife rehabilitator and rescuer Mary Cummins. Cummins comes over to access the baby. They leave the baby to see if the mother will return. After the mother does not return Cummins takes the baby to Animal Advocates' facility to care for until the baby is ready to be released back to the wild. Dr. Katrina Warren comes to visit the baby squirrel at Animal Advocates facility. Cummins then releases another squirrel back to the wild.   Link to video. Animal Advocates Celebrates Urban Wildlife Week Every Day by Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

Urban Wildlife Week, Animal Advocates, Los Angeles, California, Mary Cummins, www.animaladvocates.us, www.marycummins.com, wildlife rehabilitation, wildlife, rescue, wildlife rehabilitator, city, county, how to help wildlife, @mary_cummins, @animaladvocatesusa,
Urban Wildlife Week, Animal Advocates, Los Angeles, California, Mary Cummins, www.animaladvocates.us, www.marycummins.com, wildlife rehabilitation, wildlife, rescue, wildlife rehabilitator, city, county, how to help wildlife, @mary_cummins, @animaladvocatesusa,

Some organizations are celebrating Urban Wildlife Week this week. Every Week is "Urban Wildlife Week" for Animal Advocates because we care for ill, injured and orphaned native wildlife in the city of Los Angeles. We also educate the public about wildlife and offer help for people with nuisance wildlife.

People are sometimes surprised to see wildlife right in the middle of the city of Los Angeles. Not only does wildlife live in our city but they thrive here. Coyotes, deer, hawks, skunks, opossums, squirrels and more have adapted to live right alongside us in the city. They live in our backyards, in local parks and in adjacent open space. They eat fruit from our trees, live under our homes and even eat our trash.

Here are ten things you can do to help and coexist with urban wildlife.

  • 1. Watch and enjoy wildlife from afar but don't touch them or interfere. That means no selfies with deer or petting squirrels and skunks.
  • 2. Plant native plants for the bees, birds and native wildlife to eat. Don't trim trees during wildlife baby season. Leave bird nests where you find them even if empty. No need to rake up all the leaves as insects nest in them.
  • 3. Don't use pesticides, herbicides which can harm native wildlife.
  • 4. Pick up trash so wildlife doesn't eat it and die from stomach blockage. Don't release balloons which sea animals, farm animals and birds can eat and die or become entangled.
  • 5. Make sure your cat can't kill wildlife by keeping them in the house, a catio or walk them on a lead. Walk dogs on a leash for the same reasons. It also protects your pets from wildlife.
  • 6. Don't feed wildlife. Fed wildlife can end up dead wildlife if they become a nuisance to others. This is especially true with bears, deer, raccoons, skunks and squirrels.  Not everyone loves wildlife like we do.
  • 7. Don't poison, trap or kill nuisance wildlife. Reduce nuisance wildlife by excluding and deterring them from your property. Don't give them access to food, water or shelter.  Pick up dropped fruit, don't leave out pet food and lock your trash cans. Exclude wildlife from your home by securing your crawl space, under your deck and attic access.
  • 8. If you find ill, injured or orphaned wildlife, contact a local wildlife rehabilitator. Here's a list. http://www.mary.cc/How%20To%20Locate%20a%20Wildlife%20Rehabilitator.html
  • 9. Volunteer with or donate to local wildlife and environment organizations. If you want to know what volunteering for a wildlife rehabilitator would be like, here our some of our free manuals. http://mary.cc/squirrels/rehabbers.html
  • 10. Educate your friends about helping wildlife by sharing this article.

Animal Advocates Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2023, by Mary Cummins

Join us as we celebrate "National Hispanic Heritage Month" September 15 to October 15. During this month Americans celebrate the history, culture and contributions of Latino people to our nation. This 2023 year's theme is "Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America."

Animal Advocates celebrates Latinos who have helped animals, the environment and wildlife. We celebrate Mexican American Animal Rights Activist Cesar Chavez. Chavez once said, “We need, in a special way, to work twice as hard to help people understand that the animals are fellow creatures, that we must protect them and love them as we love ourselves.”

We celebrate Environment Activist Dolores Huerta. "In the fight to protect American farm workers Huerta exposed the country’s deepening reliance on pesticides and other chemicals that harm people and ecosystems. Her efforts to outlaw harmful pesticides catalyzed the environmental-justice movement."

We celebrate our Latina founder Mary Cummins whose love of wildlife encouraged her to found Animal Advocates over 20 years ago in 2002. Her love of all animals came from her Mexican grandmother Maria Rivera Cummins. We also celebrate the first Latino Fish & Game Commissioner Michael Flores who promoted Latinos enjoyment of the outdoors. We also support Latino Outdoors who help connect Latinos to the great outdoors and Green Latinos who work to protect our environment.

Our community of animal lovers support our causes and champion for a better world for wildlife and the planet. One of our causes is to promote much needed diversity in Fish & Wildlife and Wildlife Rehabilitation. We also promote wildlife education in Spanish and English. We borrow the words of Dolores Huerta in saying ”¡Sí, Se Puede!" "Yes, we can!" accomplish these goals.

Of course we celebrate our entire community and animal lovers world wide every day. As we primarily serve Los Angeles, California which is predominantly Latino we honor our Latino community during this special month.

*We use the term "hispanic" because that is the official name of the US heritage month. Other words that can be used are "latino," "latine," "latinx" ... The history of our nation is complex and controversial. The US was inhabited by Native Americans who were conquered and colonized by the Spanish, French, British and USA. September 15 is the day many Latin American countries gained their independence from their colonial occupations. We strive to respect and promote all people.

San Diego Sues SeaWorld for $12,000,000 in past due rent. Is the end of SeaWorld near? by Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

Wikipedia, SeaWorld, mary cummins, animal advocates, lawsuit, san diego, california

The City of San Diego sued SeaWorld for $12,000,000 in past due rent.

"The city of San Diego sued SeaWorld Thursday for allegedly failing to pay more than $12.2 million in rent, late fees, and interest.

The lawsuit follows a pledge to move forward with litigation if SeaWorld did not pay back rent and other penalties by Wednesday.

SeaWorld has argued the payments were waived because the theme park was forced to shut down for months at a time during the pandemic, while city officials say rent was only deferred.

A representative for SeaWorld said the company did not have anything to add regarding Thursday's filing other than its previous publicly released statement on the matter:

"While as a matter of policy we don't comment on potential litigation, we have enjoyed a long relationship with the city and remain hopeful that we can resolve this matter. We have partnered with the city for nearly 60 years — conducting thousands of animal rescues, numerous recycling drives and many other events. We also have paid more than $146 million in lease payments to the city of San Diego since 2010. We appreciate all the city has done and we look forward to addressing this situation."

The complaint filed in San Diego Superior Court states SeaWorld has underpaid rent between Jan. 1, 2019, and April 30, 2022.

According to the San Diego City Attorney's Office, SeaWorld's minimum rent payments total $10.4 million annually, plus a 3% surcharge under the terms of its lease.

"Although some 800 organizations have similar lease agreements with the city, SeaWorld is the only major city lessee that has remained in default of its rent obligations since the pandemic began," according to a city attorney's office statement.

For more than 50 years, SeaWorld has enjoyed a prime spot along San Diego’s Mission Bay and a good relationship with the city. That may be changing. NBC 7's Audra Stafford has the details.
The San Diego City Council voted 8-0 in May to authorize litigation.

"The city has a right to expect more from a 60-year partnership that has proven quite lucrative for SeaWorld," said San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott. "City taxpayers — many of whom are legitimately struggling to recover from the global pandemic — should not have to absorb SeaWorld's debts and liabilities. We believe a court of law will agree."

SeaWorld, which is headquartered in Orlando, Florida, owns 12 theme parks around the world, employs thousands of people, and welcomes millions of visitors. Last year, they generated $1.7 billion in profits.

Chris Workman is an attorney who has handled many property rights cases but isn't involved directly in this dispute. He said the matter is a contractual dispute that will likely have to be resolved by a judge. "

Old Los Angeles Zoo in Griffith Park by Mary Cummins of Animal Advocates

The Old Los Angeles Zoo is sometimes called the Griffith Park Zoo. It was opened in 1912 and closed in 1966 when the zoo moved to it's current location. The bars on the enclosures were removed and the area turned into a picnic area. Currently Shakespeare in the Park is located in the immediate park area.

The zoo was closed because people realized the enclosures were cruel and unnatural. Zoo science has come a long way since this time. Modern zoos are better equipped to house animals due to advancements in zoo science and research. Still, the best place for wild animals is in the wild where they belong.

Animal Advocates Supports AB 1322 : Pesticides : Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide, Diphacinone by Mary Cummins.

AB 1322, Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, anticoagulant, poison, rat poison, Pesticides: second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide: diphacinone, California, Los Angeles, wildlife, p22, death, dead, dying, mountain lion, puma, cougar

Dear Chair Portantino and Committee Members,

I'm Mary Cummins President of Animal Advocates. I almost died from accidental exposure to anti-coagulant bait in 2003 in San Buenaventura, California during a California Department of Fish & Wildlife cleanup. I strongly support the California Ecosystems Protection Act of 2023 (AB 1322) that protects California wildlife and communities against harmful rodenticides.

Mountain lion P22 died from anticoagulant-related nephropathy which resulted in bleeding in the kidneys which causes kidney failure. Anticoagulant exposure was also the cause of P22's mite infestation. This poison killed P22! (Necropsy report, findings) https://animaladvocatesmarycummins.blogspot.com/2023/06/op-ed-mountain-lion-p-22-killed-by.html

Anticoagulant rodenticides are poisoning California wildlife and have been documented in at least 38 nontarget species including the critically endangered San Joaquin kit fox and California condor. The problem is so severe that over 70% of wildlife tested in California are exposed to rodenticides. National Park Service researchers have documented the presence of anticoagulant rodenticides in 39 out of 40 mountain lions tested in the Santa Monica Mountains, which are already threatened with local extinction from habitat fragmentation and lack of wildlife connectivity. In September 2022, the four unborn kittens of a pregnant mountain lion named P-54 also tested positive for anticoagulant rodenticides.

AB 1322 is desperately needed to extend the existing moratorium on dangerous second generation anticoagulant rodenticides and strengthen future restrictions on anticoagulant rodenticides, including the first generation anticoagulant diphacinone, to better protect wildlife, children, and pets.

We attended the Cougar Conservancy, National Wildlife Federation NWF docent hike tour of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing. There was no hike and no tour or view of the crossing. We stood on a dirt road near the loud freeway while the docent just read from a paper for 30 minutes. What she read was on the website. Wasted drive and carbon foot print. Everyone was upset at the end of the event when we asked when do we see the crossing. We were told just drive on the freeway. Everyone drove on the freeway to get there so what was the point. People complained online and probably in the survey they sent out.

If you want to hike to actually see it, here is one short hike to get there with parking. No need to take the docent tour. https://animaladvocatesmarycummins.blogspot.com/2023/08/hike-to-wallis-annenberg-wildlife.html
