“Detectives found a video on social media of the suspect performing an act of bestiality,” Miller said.

02/28/19: Michael Menzel in shark dragging pleads guilty to two misdemeanors and gets ten days in jail and probation. Robert Benac awaits trial. Charges dropped against Spencer Heintz. The state dropped the main charge which was dragging the shark behind the boat. They dropped the charge as a shark expert said the shark was dead before they dragged it.

"Wenzel had been facing another felony count of animal cruelty, but it was reduced to a misdemeanor. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of using an illegal method to catch a shark. A commercial fisherman, his saltwater fishing license was revoked for five years. Along with his jail time, which he can serve on weekends, he was sentenced to 11 months of probation and 100 hours of community service. A prosecutor asked that half those hours be served at an animal shelter or animal abuse facility, but attorneys questioned whether such a center would allow him near animals."

Robert Benac was offered the same plea deal but he refused and case is going to trial.

Mary Cummins was in Lenny Kravitz's "American Woman" music video

I was "talent" in the 1999 Lenny Kravitz's "American Woman" music video. It stars Lenny Kravitz and Heather Graham and was directed by Paul Hunter. This video was a song for the movie "Austin Powers" starring Mike Myers and Heather Graham.

There were only two of us women who could ride Harleys and owned Harleys. Supposedly all the other women said they knew how to ride but they lied. The other women were being towed by a truck. You can see them revving with their clutch hand ;-) They also had some guys on Harleys way behind us so people couldn't tell they weren't women. They weren't supposed to be in the video. They just rode their bikes there to be used in the video. We were supposed to be a female biker gang led by Lenny Kravitz but his legs were too short to get on the chopper. We shot this in Lancaster on Avenue K or O I think. There's a deserted gas station and diner out there. It's actually a movie set called "The Four Aces" located at 145 Street East and Ave Q. It was freezing when the sun went down. There were also sand storms. Then intentionally bused in all the many extras because they didn't want them to leave because of the cold sand storms.

Mary Cummins in Lenny Kravitz's "American Woman" music video

Lenny Kravitz is in the background, so is his female drummer.
My girlfriend and I were stuck in Lancaster for two days having to stay overnight at a cheap motel. $500 a day was not worth it, long hours, sand storm, freezing cold at night and bikes got buried in sand. Not good for a custom motorcycle. It also took me two weeks of hounding the producer to give me my money. He tried to stiff all of us.

For the shot they wanted me to look like a dirty greasy biker so they put grease and dirt in my hair. I also had to wear a bikini top, no helmet and only some decorative glasses which did not block the wind. The wind caused my eyes to water and I thought my contact lenses flew off. I was riding blind. Turns out they were just washed to the back of my eyes and came back later. I was also riding next to someone at one point who could not ride very well. They did a quick swerve and the rest of us had to swerve around them so we wouldn't go down. All the while the cameras are held on cranes that are literally a foot in front of my face or a foot to the left of my head while going 30 to 35 miles per hour. It was also windy and the road had a lot of sand and gravel as the area is deserted.

A few other things happened on set. At the night scene when they lit off the fireworks one landed in the female drummer's hair which just briefly caught on fire. She was able to put out the flames and only needed a short break. Heather Graham was supposed to drive the old Corvette. Only problem was she did not know how to drive stick. They had to put the Corvette on the same tow truck to make it appear that she was driving. Heather Graham was supposed to do more of a dance routine on the top of the bus. Unfortunately she cannot dance very well. They videotaped her just a tiny bit and did a bunch of fast edits. Then they found dancers in the mosh pit who were really very, very good dancers.

You've heard of the director's cut. Well, this is the "extra's cut" ;-) There appears to be a few different cuts of this video. One has a few more scenes of me and my bike. They unfortunately cut the scene where I peel out, burn rubber then peel out and kick gravel up. I can't believe they asked me to do that. Last thing you want to do is peel out while turning on gravel with a lowered, raked, slammed bike with street tires.

Raccoon rescue from tiny cage in a boat - Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

Rescuing a raccoon from a tiny, dirty cage in a boat
by Mary Cummins on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 3:59pm
Raccoon in his tiny dirty cage. Four year old male not neutered. He was kept in this cage for four years on a boat by a mentally ill person. He only ate dry cat food. He broke his teeth chewing on his cage. They put a chain around his neck, don't know why. We removed it.
I received an email this morning from Peter Wallerstein of Marine Animal Rescue. He said the Los Angeles County Sheriff had impounded a boat that had a raccoon in it in a tiny dirty cage. I assumed someone had trapped a raccoon and just forgot about it. I drove to the Sheriff station to take a look at the boat. Peter agreed to meet me there to help.

Raccoon rescue, Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, Los Angeles, California

The raccoon lived in that 2' x 2' x 2' cage. The cage door didn't open. When we finally took off the front of the cage we realized he was living on top of four inches of feces. He had no water. The boat was impounded. Sheriff called me when they saw the raccoon.

I met Sheriff Office McSchwab who told me about the raccoon. He said it wasn't in a trap but a cage like a pet. It had a chain around its neck. He took me to the boat to take a look. This is what I found. A four year old male raccoon in a 2' x 2' x 2' cage. There were four inches of feces on the bottom of the cage and no water. There was no door as it looked like the owner never opened the cage. The cage was in an awkward spot and had been assembled in the boat which would make transfer to the carrier more difficult. Fortunately Peter Wallerstein showed up to help. Unfortunately so did the "owner" of the raccoon.

We had to take the cage apart to get the front off. Then we placed the carrier in the cage with the door off. I wedged the carrier over the raccoon and pressed it against the back wall. Peter and the Sheriff then replaced the carrier door on the other side. The raccoon was in the carrier. We went inside to wash up.

As I went to get my car to drive it around to the dock to pick up the raccoon the owner started following me. He's an older man whom I believe is mentally ill. He said "why did you put the raccoon in that small box when I had him in a big cage?" I ignored him and went to pick up the raccoon.

Because he was a pet raccoon and could be unpredictable I thought I'd take him to Dr. Kenneth Jones in Santa Monica to get the chain off his neck and look him over. The raccoon had shown no aggression at all, just a little cage craziness. I gave him some water out of a sippy bottle because he looked dehydrated. He was very gentle and thirsty.

Raccoon rescue, Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, Los Angeles, California

At Dr. Kenneth Jones giving the raccoon anesthesia. We wrapped the pet carrier in a plastic bag. This is the safest way.

Dr. Jones' staff gave the raccoon anesthesia so we could examine him. The easiest way to anesthetize an animal like this is to wrap the carrier in a big trash bag then use gas. After he was under they removed the chain. He had a cracked canine probably from chewing on the bars of his cage. He had some matts and was dirty and smelly.

This is his new enclosure, 6' x 6' x 4'. It has a padded cage and is smaller than my other enclosures. He's never climbed or walked before so I need to start him in something small.

UPDATE: I just added a ramp in his cage. He cannot climb at all
I took him home and put him in a 6' x 6' x 4' cage with a padded floor. He came out of his carrier then I realized he couldn't really walk. He walks on the back of the "wrists" on his forelegs and on the heels of his back feet. I don't think he's ever stood up all the way. He cannot climb at all. He was relaxed and sweet. I can easily hand feed him food. I had to add a ramp to his cage so he can get to the lower level. I have him  next to the baby raccoons so he won't feel threatened by my injured adult females. He is a bit smaller than my adult females, probably from malnutrition.

This is how he walks. He walks on the back side of his wrists. He also sleeps with them in this position. Obviously some metabolic bone disease. The pads of his feet look fine.

Thanks to the Los Angeles County Sheriff http://www.lasd.org/ and  Peter Wallerstein of Marine Animal Rescuehttp://www.marspecialists.org/ I wouldn't have been able to rescue the raccoon without their help. I will add updates on his progress.

UPDATE: A member of Animal Advocates is now caring for "Harbor" the boat raccoon. He's making remarkable progress under her cage. Here he is today, January 20, 2011. Look how healthy and happy he is? This video will make you soooo happy!
