Child bitten by coyote in Springbrook park in Irvine, California - How to prevent being bitten by coyote - Animal Advocates

Coyote Springbrook Park Irvine California, Animal Advocates, Los Angeles, coyote rescue, coyote rehabilitation, hazing

A six year old boy was bitten by a coyote in Springbrook Park in Irvine, California. The child was playing across the park from his father. The coyote approached and grabbed the boy's arm. The coyote then dragged the boy three feet. His father saw this and yelled at the coyote who let go of the boy.

Based on our experience this was caused by a few things. People are leaving food or trash out in the park for the coyote to eat. People may be BBQ'ing at the park which will lure coyotes to the area. People are probably feeding the coyote directly. Within only one hour in Griffith Park we witnessed four separate adults directly feed a coyote. The coyote also ate out of the trash. People are also not scaring the coyote away. They are taking photos and videos so they can post it on social media. That's probably why some are feeding them directly.

As we've stated many times "a fed coyote is a dead coyote." Because of this incident Fish & Wildlife have already killed four coyotes found in that area. They are being tested for rabies just to be on the safe side.

Another issue which this park has is it's location. Coyotes love to travel along the sides of freeways. This park abuts the freeway. The coyotes travel via the sides of the freeway. For all these reasons coyotes are drawn to this park.

We have the same suggestions that we always give. Secure the food and trash. Make sure animals can't get in the trash cans and the cans are emptied regularly. Educate with signs then warn people that feeding coyotes or any wildlife is illegal. Start citing people if they continue to feed. Get rid of the BBQ areas. Don't let people bring BBQ grills to the park. City employees, coyote rescue groups, Fish & Wildlife, Parks Dept need to go and haze all coyotes in the area. If you see a coyote, yell at it, rush it, stomp your feet, make loud noises. And of course most importantly closely watch small children and pets.

Nathan Winograd, no kill solutions, advocacy center, book redemption, fraud

I generally don't talk about Nathan Winograd because he's not a nice person. He defames, attacks and threatens to sue anyone if they don't support him. He's been attacking me for a while. He also plagiarized an article I wrote about wildlife in shelters. He added it to his newsletter and then to his Philadelphia nokill consulting report. I have copies. I will write a little bit about my personal history and involvement with Nathan Winograd to clarify things for people.

I first heard about Nathan Winograd in late 2004 from another rescuer. He said he could make any shelter nokill overnight. He said he's made every shelter he consulted with "nokill" over night. You just have to follow his ten basic programs which he outlined on his old website nokillsolutions.com. That was a California for profit consulting corporation C2673735 filed in 2004 then dissolved address 49 Via Palacio, San Clemente, California.

Nathan Winograd, No Kill Solutions, corporation, dissolved

This was his father in law's home which they bought in 2005 for $890K and sold in 2013 for $717K. Nathan Winograd was a consultant and gave seminars to teach others how to make shelters nokill. He sold a newsletter. That's how he made his living. Here is a copy of his old website http://web.archive.org/web/20041204055050/http://www.nokillsolutions.com/home.htm . This all sounded too good to be true but I could find no evidence at that time that he had failed, or succeeded. It was all just Nathan Winograd's word. Below is his brochure which he gave to me.

Nathan Winograd, No Kill Solutions, corporation, nokillsolutions.com
Nathan Winograd, No Kill Solutions, corporation, nokillsolutions.com

I was campaigning hard for Antonio Villaraigosa for Mayor in Los Angeles, California. I wanted LA to be "nokill." Antonio had a pro-animal campaign platform. He wanted LA to be nokill. Who wouldn't want the city to be "nokill?" I contacted Nathan Winograd and asked if he'd consult for LA if Antonio became Mayor. He said yes. I thought at the time maybe he charges $3,000 to $3,500 so I offered to pay for it. He said he would charge $20K per shelter and he included the annex (a warehouse) as a shelter. He wanted $140K to do approximately a month worth of work. I was like "whoa! I can't afford that. Neither can the City." Nathan then told me that his activists ADL ... would force the city to hire him and give him $140K. Then he said ADL told him that Guerdon Stuckey was going to get a $800K golden handshake. I told him that was not true. He said ADL's people got that inside information. I did an info act request and it turns out ADL was wrong. $800K was a waste management contract. Stuckey got a $50K handshake which was public.

Antonio became the Mayor and I asked Nathan to give him a proper estimate to consult. Nathan told me the Mayor himself must fill out his online form requesting a consultation. I told him someone in his office can do it. He said, no, it must be the Mayor. Here is the form. The incoming Mayor would have no way of knowing any of this information. The GM of Animal Services would but Nathan Winograd said the Mayor "MUST" fill it in personally.

http://www.animaladvocates.us/nathan_winograd_consulting_form.pdf

Mayor did not fill out his silly online form because he was swamped. The Mayor did agree to meet him thanks to stupid me and a person in the Mayor's office. Nathan Winograd then submitted a proposal to consult for LA City. I assume it was for a month of work for $140,000 as he quoted me. The Mayor offered Nathan Winograd the GM position of LA Animal Services. That paid $150,000/year at the time. Nathan Winograd declined. I believe he declined because he realized he could never make LA nokill overnight as he promises everyone. Nathan Winograd would also prefer $140,000 for one month worth of work instead of $150,000 for 12 months worth of work. He probably also knew the employees would eat him alive.

Nathan Winograd admitted later that day when he gave a "nokill" presentation at the Beverly Garland Hotel that he was offered the GM position. I was at that presentation in 2005. 99% of the presentation was how animal control enjoys killing animals. He spent 1% of the almost two hour presentation quickly rattling off the basic programs. Nathan Winograd did not invent the programs. They were "invented" many years earlier by others in New York and San Francisco.

Another group told me that Nathan already wrote a free nokill plan for LA City. I said "great! Where is it?" Nathan refused to give it to the city. If someone knew how to make a shelter nokill over night, why wouldn't they want to do that especially if they call themselves an animal lover? I give free consultations for humane wildlife control and how to save wildlife in shelters. I don't charge because I want to save animals. If I had the key to ending euthanasia in shelters, I would gladly give it to the world for free.

Nathan then was upset he didn't get the paid consulting gig. He told me that he took the equity out of his home to start for profit "no kill solutions" and was then forced to sell his home and shut down no kill solutions because he didn't make enough money selling consulting services. He then put his efforts into nonprofit corporation No Kill Law and Advocacy Center C2674760 IRS 20-1648359http://www.guidestar.org/organizations/20-1648359/no-kill-law-advocacy-center.aspx

Nathan Winograd, No Kill Law & Advocacy Center,

Before Nathan Winograd shut down No Kill Solutions he did consult for a few cities such as Philadelphia. The failure in Philadelphia was huge. Nathan Winograd wrote a report, got his check, posted the report (I have a copy), said the City, shelter and employees were "committed." Soon after that an expose came out about the horrific conditions in the shelter from overcrowding. The SPCA had to step in and take over. Then Nathan blamed the City, shelter and employees saying they weren't "committed." He threw his client under the bus.

Nathan was hired to do a report for King County. Nathan got his check then posted a scathing public report online with data and photos taken during his private inspection of the shelter. The City had to write a rebuttal to his claims. They didn't get a consulting report with suggestions to make their shelter no kill. They paid money to be attacked.

Nathan consulted with another shelter after this. They asked for a confidentiality agreement after the vicious attack at King County. Consultants should always agree to confidentiality agreements. Nathan said "no" then viciously attacked that shelter and told everyone they wanted a confidentiality agreement which meant they were "evil" and "hiding dirty laundry." That was the last consulting he did as far as I know. If he really could have made a shelter nokill, he would have done it by now and be a multi-millionaire. Obviously he can't.

Nathan Winograd receives $60,000/year from this non-profit. His wife Jennifer is a board member. Nathan admits there is lobbying activity (see Guidestar link above). He spent approximately $200K to make a documentary about his book "Redemption" in the last two years. He has high unspecified "professional services" expenses yet they are not legal or accounting. Most of his income is from donations. Some is from selling tickets to his conference. I believe he is the sole author and owner of his book selling business. I don't think that is part of the non-profit. He now has four books including a Vegan cook book which oddly enough recommends using products with palm oil which is not vegan. He also recommends unhealthy vegan junk food.

His book publisher Almaden Books is actually just Nathan Winograd. His book is self-published. Here are some reviews of his book. I agree with them. His book is a long winded nasty rant against other animal rights, welfare and rescue organizations. He spews nasty misinformation which I feel harms the animal issue. There is pet overpopulation. 99% of the book is Nathan saying that animal shelters enjoy killing animals, there is no pet overpopulation and he alone has made shelters no kill. Only 1% a few pages in the back talk about the no kill programs. I've never seen anyone do this in a book before in my life. He footnotes his personal opinion in his book. He also cites many "personal communications" in his bibliography. Then in the end he admits his wife's parents are supporting them financially. If he could make an animal shelter no kill, he'd be wealthy He can't which is why his business went under.

People should realize that Nathan Winograd is friendly with the Center for Consumer Freedom. CCF is a paid lobby group that promotes alcohol, tobacco, animal research, fur industry, breeders, dairy, meat ranches, leather, anti-union. They are a non-profit that receives "donations" of about $1.4M/year to attack groups such as MADD, PETA, HSUS... They give almost all of that money to a "consultant" who does PR for these industries who happens to be the President of CCF. I believe it's a sham which I have posted about in this blog.

http://animaladvocateswildliferehabilitation.blogspot.com/2013/12/center-for-consumer-freedomhumane-watch.html

No animal lover should ever have anything to do with CCF. Because Nathan Winograd hates PETA which CCF attacks that is why Nathan is friends with CCF. Nathan Winograd has attacked PETA so viciously that PETA's lawyer had to send him a cease and desist letter. Here is the rest of the letter. http://www.rescuenetwork.org/articles/WinogradLetter.pdf

PETA cease and desist to Nathan Winograd who lies about PETA. I'll try to find the rest.

Nathan Winograd and the myth of his "success," Redemption, no kill solutions

I just read this article linked here about Nathan Winograd in Tompkins County. Nathan Winograd claims he made that shelter "NoKill." This blog post includes two articles in the main newspaper for the area which tell a completely different story. I tried to share the article here but couldn't so I'm copy/pasting it with a link to the original article. I have known Nathan Winograd for many years. I'll comment after the article. This is a must read which shows Nathan Winograd's true nature.

http://www.workingtohelpanimalstodaytomorrow.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-tompkins-county-no-kill-miracle.html

"THE TOMPKINS COUNTY 'NO KILL' MIRACLE EXPOSED

Recently a couple of articles were purchased from the archives of the Ithaca Journal. These articles tell the tale of Nathan Winograd at the Tompkins County SPCA, a tale of deceit that continues to this very day. The publicly available abstracts are presented for both articles.

http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/ithacajournal/doc/377865287.html?FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&date=Feb+22%2C+2003&author=LaMattina%2C+Diana&pub=The+Ithaca+Journal&edition=&startpage=&desc=SPCA+hounds+Groton+breeder%2C+kennel

Nathan Winograd, nokill fraud, lie, Tompkins County animal shelter

The first of these two tales is that of the protection of a puppy mill by Winograd while in Tompkins.
The Ithaca Journal - Ithaca, N.Y.
Author: LaMattina, Diana
Date: Feb 22, 2003
Abstract (Document Summary)

"According to Winograd, the investigator informed him there were numerous complaints with the kennel and the dogs' care. According to Winograd, he has been aware of what he termed "unfit conditions" at the Groton kennel since he began working at the SPCA a year and a half ago."

A year and a half these dogs were left in these conditions. The reason is that Winograd wanted to save his numbers. Imagine the amount of suffering that occurred during that time.

"Many of them were so filthy that your hands turned black from touching them. The conditions were pretty shocking and horrifying, and she wouldn't allow us to go back to the kennel cages," said Christine Thomas. "Some of them had mammary tumors from being bred and bred. They were all filthy with urine and feces. Their coats were so matted, we had to shave several of them."

"My goal was to reduce the number gradually over time, so it's manageable," Winograd said.

You don't wait to reduce numbers gradually when the animals are in these conditions. Many, if not most, of the dogs were old and not the adoptable types. They needed extensive medical, lots of money for a private shelter whose director never raised the contract amounts of the contract cities. HE LEFT THEM THERE !!

This blogger is familiar with this story personally. I spoke with Patricia Sipman. Patricia Sipman described the incident. She also took the time to relay this incident to the Rancho Cucamonga City Council who was considering hiring Winograd at the time. Sipman is a native of San Dimas, next door to Rancho.

Sipman had just moved to Ithaca from California. She had been a paralegal in Pasadena. She went to the Tompkins County SPCA to adopt that day. While sitting in the lobby, a Cornell student brought in a pitiful Pit Bull. The student was the owner. Sipman said the dog was extremely ill, emaciated, mange ridden to the point of little hair left, stunk with blood coming from sores. She petted the dog in sympathy. Sipman has wondered what happened to that poor dog.

The counter people went to get Winograd. He came out, look at the dog from the distance, and said "We don't take dogs like that" and walked back into his office. Sipman was mortified at this and wrote a letter to the Ithaca Journal.

Nathan Winograd, nokill fraud, lie, scam, Tompkins County animal shelter

Jan. 28, 2004

"I visited the shelter often last fall and saw a dog turned away. It was not vicious; indeed I petted it. It was underfed, neglected, had advanced contagious mange and perhaps other health problems.

When I asked, I was told that the SPCA routinely rejects such animals, but conveniently no statistics reflect this. The dog could and should have been quickly, humanely euthanized."

Patricia also went on in her letter to speak of the deceit of the stats provided by the TC SPCA.

"Tompkins County SPCA Executive Director Nathan Winograd has said ".....a no-kill shelter was a fantasy. In five years, we have reached that goal." If the director is referring to his facility as no kill when in fact 2,012 animals were killed since 1999, he's still fantasizing. Likely the "no-kill" facilities he transferred 882 animals to are, like Tompkins County, euthanizing animals."

Patricia told me also that Winograd sent 3-4 nasty emails to her afterwards. Most rational people would try to explain their actions, especially to a taxpayer/concerned citizen, but not Winograd. He called her names, childish behavior as Patricia said.

So here are two documented cases of the true nature of Nathan Winograd. His dedication to his program at the expense and suffering of animals is unconscionable. Ask him to provide any documentation of his accusations of others."

What Nathan Winograd did was inexcusable. He knowingly allowed animals to be treated inhumanely. Some probably died of illness during this time. That is truly shameful behavior. In an October 1, 2004 letter to colleagues Nathan Winograd stated he could not legally refuse any animal. So not only does he refuse a dog that needed help but he violated the county animal control contract. Here is the letter as a pdf. http://www.animaladvocates.us/Letter%20from%20Nathan.pdf Below is part of the letter as text.

"So when the opportunity presented itself, I packed my bags and moved to the rolling countryside of upstate New York to head the Tompkins County SPCA. I wanted to bring the urban no kill message—and its success—to rural America. At the time, the Tompkins County SPCA was typical of rural shelters. It was small, it was under funded, it was running a significant deficit and it was killing a lot of animals. But I believed in no kill and the programs and services necessary to make it happen.

As Executive Director of the Tompkins County SPCA, I managed the full range of animal control and adoption shelter services. Despite animal control contracts which required that we accept all dogs and cats, in my three years there:

• We reduced the death rate by 75% to 1.8 animals for every 1,000 human residents, over eight times less than the national average and the lowest of any community in the United States;
• Tompkins County became the safest community for homeless dogs and cats in the U.S. for two years in a row (source: Animal People); and,
• We became the nation’s only no kill community saving 100% of healthy and treatable dogs and cats, and 100% of feral cats (93% of the animals overall).

At the same time, I more than doubled the average gift, closed a budget deficit, created a major donor category for the first time in the organization’s history leading to consecutive years of surplus funding, and built a state-of-the-art Pet Adoption and Surgery Center. In a year and a half, while the death rate declined by 75%, the Tompkins County SPCA went from a $100,000-plus annual deficit to a $23,000 operational surplus.

The success in Tompkins County—both in terms of the lives saved and the dollars earned—proved the naysayers wrong. We proved that no kill is possible and that it does not matter whether you live in a major metropolitan city or in rural America. We proved that while no kill costs money, it is ultimately cost-effective. In fact, it is the policy of impounding, holding and then killing animals—losing both adoption revenue and public support—that has kept shelters from raising the money they
need to save lives. Money is a by-product of no kill success, not its cause. But perhaps more importantly, we proved that people do care and want to help build a better life for animals.
By 2003, the Tompkins County SPCA had become a beacon of hope for the 5 million dogs and cats who face certain death in U.S. animal shelters every year. And for good reason—if every community in the United States did what we did, 41⁄2 million of those dogs and cats would find in their shelter a new beginning, instead of the end of the line."

Nathan Winograd posted something recently on Facebook. This is Nathan Winograd.

"When I was in law school, I convinced my roommate that we could respond humanely to an ant infestation by putting cucumber slices all over the kitchen. Ants, I told him, don’t like cucumbers. Unfortunately, it failed. I then talked him into buying plastic ants which we put out. My argument was that if the real ants saw the fake ants, they would think a rival colony took over and they’d leave. I said all this with a straight face. Naturally, that failed, too. But it did buy the ants enough time that they eventually went away on their own (cleaning the kitchen helped!). Given that my roommate was incredibly smart and had higher grades than me (and went on to become a partner at a ginormous law firm specializing in mergers and acquisitions), I realized then and there I’d make a pretty decent lawyer. Now, go be the best person you can be..."

His kitchen was dirty so it attracted ants. He decides to suggest some things to his roommate which make no sense. He of course fails.  He ultimately cleans the kitchen and of course the ants leave. He admits he has the power to make people believe bullshit, like the myth of no kill.

Nathan Winograd likes to state "when I ran the SFSPCA..." Nathan Winograd was the operations manager for only nine days. Nathan Winograd does not play well with others. He always attacks, attacks, attacks then gets fired or quits. From Animal People News,

"November 2000 brought the abrupt resignations of Law and Advocacy Department chief Nathan Winograd. Sayres then named Winograd operations director on November 1, assigned to fix the problems. On November 10, however, Winograd again resigned. He worked on special projects from his home until November 29, when Sayres terminated him under an agreement which precluded talking to news media."

Again Nathan Winograd blabs about all the dirty little secrets in an organization. And he wonders why he failed as a consultant and GM of animal shelters.
