Eric L Sakach Passes Away at 71 in Sacramento, California by Mary Cummins

Sad to hear about the passing of Eric Lane Sakach this morning in California. He was a Senior Law Enforcement Specialist at  The Humane Society of the United States now called Humane World for Animals who retired in 2020. Sakach served as an investigator from 1976 to 1995, and as director of the HSUS West Coast Regional Office from 1995 to 2008. He attended University of Nevada Reno and John Hopkins University. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph G Sakach, Elizabeth Lane Shay, survived by his brother Gary, wife Kathleen Stanley, children Jenny Wilson, Jacque Jensen Dawson, three grandchildren and a great grandchild.  RIP. 12/24/1953 -11/18/2025.

I first met him 15 years ago at a cockfighting raid in California. I was on the HSUS NDART team with him. Photos from the cockfighting raid 15 years ago. Article here https://animaladvocatesmarycummins.blogspot.com/2010/05/mary-cummins-humane-society-of-us.html

UPDATE: Merritt Clifton decided to write a negative article about Eric Sakach immediately after he passed away. He writes a few nice paragraphs about his animal loving family and history thinking that makes up for the negative things he later states. He basically blames Eric for the proliferation of dog fighting and human death because he or actually HSUS was against breed specific legislation against pitbulls. Too soon, Merritt, too soon. Eric also wasn't the head of HSUS and didn't make the position statements.  He didn't always agree with HSUS. He just didn't publicly say that on the record as an employee of HSUS.  https://www.animals24-7.org/2025/11/22/eric-sakach-71-busted-dogfights-cockfights-but-unleashed-pit-bull-horror/

I spoke to Eric about animal issues. When he worked for HSUS he stated the organization's position on animal issues even though it wasn't always his own opinion or belief. We spoke about wildlife issues. His own opinion didn't match or align perfectly with HSUS at that time. When he spoke publicly he stated and towed the company line. He told me that specifically because I disagreed with HSUS's wildlife position at the time on a couple of issues.  He actually agreed with my research backed position which was at complete odds with HSUS.

One big thing to consider is HSUS was run by Wayne Pacelle at that time. Wayne was best buds with Gary Michelson. Gary pumped tons of money to fight breed specific legislation against pitbulls. Gary paid for lobbyists, a white paper, donated to pro pit organizations, lawyers and actively fought against anti pitbull organizations and laws. Gary did this just because he bought and owned a couple of nice pure bred pits. I know this because someone lied and told him I was behind the main anti pitbull website which records human deaths by pits. I proved it wasn't me but he still came after me through one of his wife's friends. Gary donated to HSUS. Of course they will be pro pitbull and of course Eric will state the company line when asked on the record. Many HSUS donors are pro pitbull so they will be pro pitbull and make all their employees state the same. Merritt should be attacking HSUS, Humane World for Animals instead of a dead man.

I made a comment on Merritt's article which he didn't approve or post. I basically stated what I stated above. Bad enough Merritt bad mouths a dead guy. Then he won't even allow a comment which states that Eric's opinion was different than HSUS's position statement. Blaming a dead guy for the position statement of his employer a large corporation is just plain stupid. In light of his recent death also cruel and insensitive. Merritt should be writing the nasty article about HSUS, Humane World for Animals instead. He would not have dared said that to Eric's face.

This was right after the cockfighting raid on Facebook.

NIPOMO, Calif. — The Humane Society of the United States provided support and expertise to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department  in  raiding a suspected cockfighting locale in Central California. Authorities impounded more than 600 birds and found what appear to be a fighting arena, training area, cockfighting implements and publications devoted to the illegal blood sport.

“Cockfighting enterprises drag down entire communities and relegate untold thousands of roosters to brutal injuries and deaths in the ring,” said Eric Sakach, senior law enforcement specialist for The HSUS. “The Humane Society of the United States commends the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department Rural Crime Task Force for taking allegations of cockfighting crimes seriously.”

Sakach, an animal fighting expert with more than 30 years of experience, led The HSUS’ 10-person team and assisted in the identification of potential evidence.

“We believe that cockfighting promotes additional criminal activity,” said Commander Brian Hascall, SLO County Sheriff South Station. “Our Rural Crime Task Force deputies do an excellent job coordinating these efforts.”

The HSUS offers rewards of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of any person involved in illegal animal fighting. Anyone with information about animal fighting criminals is asked to call 877-TIP-HSUS (847-4787). Your identity will be protected.

About Cockfighting:

Cockfighting is illegal in every state, and all animal fighting that affects interstate commerce is punishable as a federal felony under the Animal Welfare Act.
Common cockfighting practices include breeding birds for viciousness, drugging them to heighten aggression, and fitting their legs with deadly weapons — that is, razor-sharp knives or gaffs, which resemble curved ice picks.
Law enforcement raids across the country have, again and again, documented the connection between cockfights and other crimes — including distribution of illegal drugs and weapons violations due to the large amounts of cash present for gambling.
Despite common sense and reason, children are often brought to cockfights by their parents — which may expose them to animal cruelty and rampant crime.
