Animal Advocates and Mary Cummins were at the Skid Row Care Campus in downtown Los Angeles with Project Street Vet caring for cats, dogs, kittens and puppies September 20, 2026. There were three veterinarians. Lots of animals received exams, vaccinations and medications. 

Animal Advocates comment: There has been a lot of talk recently among some animal activists who believe that no homeless people should be allowed to have pets. We don't agree with that sentiment. We believe that the only time a pet should be taken away from someone, housed or unhoused, is when they are abusing or neglecting the animal. Most of the pet owners, guardians we've seen come in for care are good pet guardians providing proper care. Each case should be examined for facts and evidence. We've seen plenty of wealthy housed people abuse and neglect their pets. The issue here is you can see unhoused people in the open on the streets with their pets. You can't see housed people hidden away in their houses with their pets. We've also seen unhoused people give their pets great care. If you were to take away their pets just because they're unhoused, you'd kill not only the person but also the animal. Where would all these pets go? They'd go to the shelter where they'd be euthanized. Is that what they activists want? Think about it. 

Some of these people making huge dramatic displays on Instagram, Facebook about pets belonging to the unhoused are doing it for attention, donations and money. They enjoy riling people up against the unhoused for the attention and money it makes them. Consider the source. These same people are not long time animal rescuers. They don't run a sanctuary. They don't reach out to help lots of unhoused people and their pets. They don't donate to spay neuter animals. They instead like to find old dead animals on Skid Row to photograph, videotape, rant about and blame local politicians. They are not helping the problem but making things worse. That's not how you get politicians to help animals. That's how you get politicians to not want to work with you.
