Audit of Los Angeles Animal Services by Mary Cummins of Animal Advocates

December 4, 2024 LA City Controller Kenneth Mejia ordered an independent audit of Los Angeles Animal Services. Mejia ordered the audit because of increasing intake and euthanasia rates at Los Angeles city animal shelters noted by outside animal rescue organization Best Friends. Mejia stated "Our audit aims to give L.A. Animal Services, the public, and policymakers a detailed understanding of LAAS' struggle to provide adequate care, and the audit will identify ways the system can be improved, both at current funding levels and with additional funding."

A part of that audit included a Request for Proposals (RFP) titled “Evaluation of LA City Animal Shelters and Care” by an independent consultant. The proposal may have been about to be awarded to past LA Animal Services Chief veterinarian Dr Dena Mangiamele. Mangiamele was allegedly notified by the City Controller that the contract was cancelled due to conflict of interest. I tried to confirm with the City Controller and Dena Mangiamele but neither returned my email. As far as I know the City Controller is still doing an audit. Maybe they just chose a different consultant or no consultant to save funds.

In light of all of this I decided to do my own quick audit. I was asked to be a commissioner for LA Animal Services around 2006. I was on the Prop F Committee around 2006. I used to attend all the meetings and publicly post my minutes before they started audio recordings. I've been following the Department closely since 2000 and have written a few mini audits and articles if you search this blog. I link two mini audits I did below from 2015 and another in 2011.

I took a look at the Department animal statistics since 2017. I'm sure I have stats from 1990's if not earlier in my records. Intake and euthanasia rates had been going down while spay neuter was going up since the 1970's. Below is a summary of the statistics.

Intake was going down, live save was going up then Covid hit March 2020 with lockdown. Some probably relinquished animals early in the pandemic as they couldn't afford to keep them without working. Later 2020, 2021 fewer animals came in and more were adopted during Covid as people had more time for pets. Number of spay neuters went down because of Covid lockdown so population increased. After Covid lockdown people went back to work and dumped adopted animals and fosters. Intake went up as did euth rate. Intake is still below 2017 to 2019 levels. Euth is back up above 2017 levels. During this time the Dept budget increased until 2025 when it decreased because of LA City budget issues. A good thing is live save rate is about stable to a little less which is amazing considering increase in intake. Another good thing is spay neuter is now back up to pre Covid levels. The biggest complaint today is overcrowding in the shelter. The shelter is actually limiting animal intake by refusing some animals. The shelter is overcrowded because the only other immediate alternative is euthanasia. It's damned if you do, damned if you don't. If the Dept euthanizes, people will complain even louder about the euth rate. If they don't, they'll complain about over crowding. Pick your poison.

Another issue to consider is the addition of the new larger shelters starting in 2006. I was on the Prop F Committee to build the new shelters. I asked how the Department will pay for more employees to take care of a larger shelter which can house more animals. I was told Prop F funds can only be used to build the shelters and not staff or support them. This has caused some field employees to spend more time in the shelter. The animal per employee ratio is also higher than previously.

A recent issue is the economy. Tariffs, rising interest rates, rising rents, uncertain economy has caused people to tighten their budgets. If we go into a recession, it'll get even worse as this generally leads to more animals being dumped and fewer adopted. Another issue is immigrants being deported or self deporting. It costs $350 for a vet visit and airline certificate besides $200 to fly pets back home. Many can't afford it and are leaving pets behind.

What is the solution to this problem? The Department has been increasing spay neuter post Covid above pre Covid rates. It will take time to get the intake back down. Things will be more difficult now that the budget has been cut 4% compared to 2024. The shelter is working with many different rescue groups with spay neuter, adoptions, foster, grants... Our organization Animal Advocates has worked with the shelter since 2000 so we know all their programs.

Sadly we are seeing more pleas from the shelters begging us to take animals within the last two months. End of July and August historically is generally the time they have to euthanize animals for space. It's post puppy, kitten season and people dump animals to go on vacation. The shelter has no other options. If anyone would like to help, adopt an animal. Tell people to adopt instead of buying one. Support a rescue group that takes animals from the shelters. Help people so they don't have to dump their animal. This is not the shelter's problem. They are just the dumping ground. It's everyone's problem. Attacking the Department only makes the problem worse. Please, be part of the solution instead and try to help.

Blessing of the Animals Los Angeles 2025 by Mary Cummins Animal Advocates

Mary Cummins founder of Animal Advocates attended the Blessing of the Animals at Olvera Street in Los Angeles, California today April 19, 2025. Archbishop Jose Horacio Gomez gave the blessing. Deputy Mayor Jacquelin Hamilton spoke along with councilmember Ysabel Jurado. The line to have animals blessed was half a mile long. People started standing in line early around 11:00 am instead of 1:00 pm.

The event was well attended and there were no incidents except one. The Aztec dance group for some reason released a couple of doves. The doves flew for maybe ten seconds and ended up on the ground. A dog instantly tried to eat one and had the entire dove in its mouth instantly. Thankfully a man got the dove out of the dog's mouth.

Never release doves. The doves they sell at the pet store have lived their entire lives in tiny cages. They can't fly! All those birds end up dead. When the popes used to release doves they would instantly be attacked and killed by seagulls and crows. We rescue a lot of these wedding doves and white pigeons. They cannot survive in the wild. They are too tame, can't find food and don't know how to avoid predators.

How to Care for Extremely Emaciated Dehydrated Injured Ill Animals, Wildlife by Mary Cummins

How to care for extremely abused, neglected, emaciated, ill, injured animals. This article is from 2007 but Facebook got rid of Notes so I'm reposting it here. It's very important.

We've all heard the story about someone who rescues an emaciated, dehydrated, abused, neglected injured dog that was tied to a stake for years, left in a kennel all alone or found roaming the street homeless. They take the animal to the vet for medical care, then to the groomers, bring it home, give it lots of food, toys, love, attention, exercise, take photos...and it dies in a couple of days if not in a day. I'm writing this article to hopefully prevent those unfortunate deaths.

I have found with very ill, injured, emaciated, dehydrated, neglected wildlife, pets or farm animals, you have to take things very slow in the beginning or you can overwhelm their system and they will die quickly. This is what we do with extremely emaciated, dehydrated, ill and injured wildlife. The same applies to all animals and humans as well. They suffer from refeeding syndrome and die. Don't proceed to the next step until you have done the previous steps. If you feed a cold, dehydrated animal, it will die. *Always talk to your veterinarian and follow his/her advice.

1. TREAT LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. Treat life threatening injuries such as blood loss, temporarily set and wrap a bad break, treat severe burns, wounds, give antibiotics for infections... During this initial period keep the animal in a quiet, safe area away from other animals, loud noise, lots of light or activity. We keep wildlife in crates of course. Sometimes we will put blind folds on animals or cover their ears to reduce stimuli which can stress them.

2. GET ANIMAL WARM/COOLED. Get the animal warm if it's cold, cool it if it is too hot. If the animal is very cold (hot), slowly and gradually warm (cool) them. If you do it too fast, they will die. We all have the desire to instantly care for all the needs of an animal as fast as we can but that will overwhelm the animal causing their death.

3. HYDRATE. Get them hydrated. If they are extremely dehydrated, do it gradually. We use warm Pedialyte or Gatorade. Don't give the full recommended amount of fluids if they are extremely dehydrated. They won't be able to absorb, process it. The most effective way to get fluids in them is orally. If they are unconscious, very weak, have difficulty breathing, swallowing we tube them. Fluids are absorbed more readily with less energy via the stomach than subq. If that is not possible, then subq with lactated ringers if the animal is small or IV with proper fluids if they are larger and you are capable of doing this.

4. EMERGENCY EXTERNAL PARASITES. Treat external parasite if you can do it easily with Advantage, Frontline when you start hydrating. Don't use harsh sprays or give them a bath if they are weak, dehydrated or extremely emaciated. Fleas and ticks must be killed so they will stop draining the animal. Maggots are generally not life threatening as they eat dead flesh but we remove them and give Capstar. Remove fly eggs so they don't hatch into maggots then into flies.

5. SLOWLY START FEEDING. After you have treated life threatening injuries, warmed/cooled, hydrated, treated some external parasites, slowly and gradually introduce small amounts of slightly watered down bland food. Do not give the suggested serving amount. If they have not eaten in a while, they won't have the energy, gut flora necessary to digest and process the food and die from refeeding syndrome. If you give them an average sized meal, they won't have the ability to process it and could die. Give smaller portions mixed with water more frequently. I suggest giving 1/3 to 1/2 a normal serving based on current weight, not ideal weight. Yes, we want them to gain weight but that comes after they are stabilized. You can safely increase size of meals later. If they get diarrhea, stop the food, hydrate only, give probiotics until diarrhea stops. You may be tempted to give Nutrical which is generally okay but it's high in fat and can give them diarrhea so be careful. It's best to add it later to increase calories.

6. ANIMAL IS STABILIZED. It generally takes 24-72 hours to fully stabilize a very emaciated, dehydrated...animal. Time to treat other symptoms. After animal has a normal temperature, is fully hydrated, has eaten a few meals, made nice poops, nice colored urine, it's time to treat other symptoms. Treat them in order of importance. Continue to keep the animal in a quiet environment away from other animals and activity. If the animal seems stressed or gets very tired, taper back the activity.

7. GROOMING. A severely matted dog will need to have mats trimmed out. If dog is fearful of electric shears, carefully and gently use scissors. If dog needs to be sedated, wait until the dog is fully stabilized. Do not perform non-emergency surgery or sedate an animal that is not stabilized. After removing the mats bathe the animal. If it's a dog that is not stressed by being bathed in the tub, that is fine. If it's a wild animal, we just wipe it down gently. Trim the nails if they are severely overgrown and negatively affecting the animal. Do not cut the quick. Just do an emergency trim for now.

8. PARASITES. Some external parasites can be treated with grooming. You can now use stronger products if needed for ring worm, mange, mites, ticks, lice, fleas...This is when you would give baths or use dips. Treating internal parasites is a little trickier. If you suspect the animal has a huge load of internal parasites such as round worms, you have to be careful. If you kill them all at once, they could cause a blockage. Consult your veterinarian. We care for raccoons and skunks which can have massive amounts of worms which look like a cup of spaghetti when they exit. Some baby pet skunks get blocked with dead round worms. When tape worms let go of the gut wall, it causes cramping and pain. Monitor the animal to make sure they are not straining or prolapsing its rectum. Your vet may suggest a laxative to help eliminate the worms. If the animal was severely malnourished, most gut worms would have already died from starvation. If you are treating coccidia..., the treatment is not stressful.

9. TREAT NON-EMERGENCY SYMPTOMS. Wild squirrels can have overgrown teeth. I would trim the overgrown incisor teeth (which are like our finger nails with no nerves) after getting the animal stable unless a tooth is almost in their eye then quickly trim that. If they need dental surgery, I would wait until fully stabilized so they can survive the surgery. Now you can vaccinate, clean ears... I would not spay or neuter until animal is healthy. Now it is safe to give the animal anesthesia. Do no give the animal anesthesia until it is fully stabilized or you will kill it. One can do a blood test to see if the animal is healthy enough for anesthesia.

10. ANIMAL IS HEALTHY. If the animal is a wild animal, we put them in an outdoor enclosure protected from elements with proper food and water. If this is a non-wild or non-feral pet, you can now slowly interact with them more. It's now safe to spay or neuter. You can brush them, hand feed them, show them toys, slowly give them more room to walk around, eventually walking them a little on a leash in a room then in a yard. Now you can start with training with positive reinforcement. Eventually introduce them to other people, animals and maybe lower energy children. If they seem stressed, winded or tired, scale back the activity especially with older animals. You need to slowly build up play, walk time and activities with other animals and humans.

The stabilization process should take 24 to 72 hours to get them basically stabilized if they are merely emaciated, dehydrated and cold. It should then take a week to two weeks to get them fully stabilized and basically healthy. This of course depends upon other injuries and illnesses besides age.

We all love animals and want to instantly treat all their symptoms and give them lots of love, food and attention. We need to restrain ourselves for the good of the animal. I've seen so many with good hearts take neglected, malnourished animals out of the shelter, shower them with lots of treatment, love, food, treats...and the animal dies within a day or two. I'm writing this article to prevent that.

She was carrying them without crates. She’s staying to look for her neighbors' animals. 03/20/2019 Cats killed in Edmonton were killed by coyotes and not a demented person.

"Nick Nation, a veterinary pathologist and adjunct professor, and Colleen Cassady St. Clair teamed up to study case 53 files and necropsy results cats killed between 2007 and 2017." They state exactly what I stated below about how coyotes kill, dismember and eat cats. This is science. These are facts.

Scotland Yard took three years to come to the conclusion that dead, mutilated cats were killed by foxes and not a "sick depraved human." Here's the summary.

"London police have announced the conclusion of a three-year investigation into a suspected cat serial killer – who activists believe has killed up to 400 animals since 2014. Police said Thursday the culprit, however, is not a person but the urban fox.

Detectives examined dozens of dead cats believed to have been killed by the Croydon Cat Killer, who became something of a local legend as reports of dismembered, beheaded and mutilated family pets began accumulating starting in 2014 in the south London district of Croydon.

But on Thursday police said that foxes were the culprits for the mutilations, which they said were all carried out on cats who had previously been killed by blunt force trauma. “Scavenging foxes then mutilated body parts – especially heads and tails,” police said."

Read the rest of the article. Again there is a suspect who is a male who drives around. How long will the people in Washington still believe a human is killing cats. It's clearly coyotes. It could also be foxes.

ORIGINAL: There have been many reports over many years about "sick, twisted humans" killing cats in gruesome ways. The owner of the cats and others insist a human must have used a "scalpel" to cut their cat in half or disembowel them with very little blood. Some even swear they saw a "sketchy looking man in a car driving around the neighborhood looking for cats to kill." They swear the body parts were "placed, staged" to cause humans fear. They even offer rewards for the "killer."

Years of evidence has shown that these are generally cases where a coyote or two killed a cat to eat. Their main diet is wild bunnies, ground squirrels, gophers and berries. If you leave your cat outside and unprotected, they will eat it because it's easier to catch than a wild bunny or gopher. Keep your cat and all small pets indoors and protected.

How to tell if a coyote or a human or a dog killed your cat.

Coyotes try to approach the cat from behind. They don't want to have to deal with sharp teeth and claws. They will grab the cat by the back of the neck and bite, shake hard to quickly kill the cat. Sometimes when they bite and shake the head comes off. They will keep their jaws clenched on the cat until they know it's dead. Sometimes the cats die from shock or suffocation.

Coyotes will generally just eat the protein and calorie rich organ meats. After the cat is dead they rip open the stomach area, disembowel the cat and eat the organs. Sometimes the intestines will be pulled out. Sometimes when eating the organs the cat ends up in two pieces. Sometimes they are hunting in a pack. One coyote may grab part of the cat while another grabs the other end. Sometimes they rip the cat in two ripping off all of part of the tail and maybe even degloving the remaining tail or skinning part of the body in the process.

They generally attack from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. when it's dark out. Because no humans are generally around at those hours they will eat the cat on the front lawn or parkway. They aren't "intentionally displaying the dead animal" as some state. Outdoor cats generally hang out in the front of homes. If the coyotes are interrupted while they are eating, they may take the cat parts and go eat elsewhere. If it's a pack of coyotes hunting for a female with pups, they may bring the entire dead cat back to the den. They also sometimes do this to train pups how to hunt and eat. Mom will rip open a cat so her pups can get to the organ meat.

Below is an article from Albuquerque Journal, New Mexico, Aug 1, 1993. It quotes Los Angeles County Animal Control.

"Mason's cat, Weasel, disappeared from the driveway of the couple's Plano home last month." "He found the body" "head and forepaw neatly severed, the heart and other internal organs removed and laid aside." 'Otherwise it was all clean. There was no blood on the cat's coat. The remaining intestines were all gone." "The body, head and paw, and heart seemed placed, Mason thought arranged in a triangle. He notified Plano police." Neighbors frequently see coyotes in the area but "Mason does not think coyotes killed his cat. I wouldn't rule anything out but I don't think so." "It looks like the animals have been surgically taken apart, because coyotes are very skilled predators," says Bob Ballenger, executive assistant of the Los Angeles County Dept of Animal Care and Control. "It's not a chew and a rip-up."

Here's another big scare that turned out to be coyotes. I have redacted the person's name and the name of the group. They were not from the area and not familiar with coyote kills. The coyotes live in the golf courses and leave to go eat outdoor cats for dinner at night.

chopped in half or into three pieces and posed in the front yards of neighbors in this area since July. *** has been investigating this horrible violent criminal activity and has some leads but have not caught the perpetrator yet. We have posted $1,000 reward signs for information leading to the
conviction of the killer in the area where the bodies have been found. If anyone would like to help with this investigation please contact me at the *** and I will discuss with you ways that you can assist. By the way, it is always best to keep your cat indoors, but especially if you live in this neighborhood!!!"

If a dog were to kill a cat, they also go for the neck. After the cat is dead they generally don't eat it. They may play with it by tossing it around by the neck or legs. You will see a bit of dog saliva on the neck. Coyotes don't play with their food. They just eat it. Very little saliva on the neck. The main wound is on the neck. The other wounds are just from eating it.

Some wonder why there is very little blood at the kill site. There's a very good reason for that. The coyote breaks the cat's neck quickly. This causes the heart to stop pumping. The coyote finally rips into the stomach area, peritoneal cavity when the heart has stopped. For this reason the blood loss will be minimized.

How to keep your cats, small pets safe from coyotes.

The most important thing to do is keep your cats and small animals indoors and protected. If a coyote doesn't kill your cat, a dog, car, another cat could kill them.

It never makes sense to trap and kill coyotes who eat pets. Every coyote you trap/kill will instantly be replaced by another coyote. You'd also need a permit and trappers charge about $1,000-$1,500 to trap each coyote. Coyotes don't go into Hav-a-Hart traps and snare traps are now illegal in Los Angeles, California. It's illegal to trap and relocate healthy nuisance wildlife in California. You'd have to drive them at least 50 to 100 miles away or they'll just return anyway.

The best thing to do is not lure them to your home. Keep small pets indoors. Don't leave out cat food. Coyotes are omnivores who eat berries and seeds. Remove the bird feeder. Lock up your trash. Pick up dropped fruit. Clear brush where they den.

Also deter and exclude coyotes. Every time you see a coyote scare it away by stomping your feet, yelling at it, making loud noise, charge it, run after it... Notice spine is broken clear through. Most of it is missing. Ribs were broken to get to organ meats. Part of intestine is hanging out with part wrapped around the cat. This is from September 2018 in Florida. It is of course a coyote kill. Part of the spine is missing as are the ribs and organs. The coyote chewed through ribs to get to organs, also ate organs in abdominal cavity. Coyote may have been disturbed while eating and took that portion away from the site. TNR people believe it's a human doing this. No. TNR people are responsible for these cats' deaths. Don't leave cats outside for many reasons.

So many times people think it's evil humans when it's not. There have been some truly embarrassing cases of people even police insisting it's a devil worshiper or someone who practices Santeria killing the cats. In the end people realize it's just coyotes. Only three out of 1,300 dead cat calls to Los Angeles Animal Services were not killed by coyotes. Coyotes eat cats and small pets to survive. They don't do it to be mean to people or pets. If you left a stack of money in the middle of the street and someone took it, don't blame the person who took it. Blame yourself for leaving it there unprotected.

Below are some good articles about this subject. This includes research on what coyotes actually eat. It also includes necropsies done by experienced wildlife veterinarians and other experts. They can DNA test the saliva on the neck and other places on the body. They can check to see if there is any coyote fur under the nails of the cats. Generally there's not as the coyotes kill so quickly from behind. Of the small dogs I've seen who were attacked by coyotes and survived, they only have a neck wound.

Here are some lies Nathan Winograd likes to tell about PETA. Notice, 99% of everything Nathan says is "HSUS, PETA, ASPCA are evil!!!. They enjoy killing animals. They want to kill all animals. They kill animals they get their hands on." This is of course false. He spends 99% of the time ONLY attacking other groups instead of trying to end pet euthanasia. Nathan Winograd does this so people will give him money, buy his books, pay for his seminars, watch his movie... Nathan Winograd attacks these groups for money. He's also very jealous that they are large, successful groups who are positively lobbying for animals while he can't make a living.

Below are just a few of the many lies he says about PETA. PETA's responses are also shared by HSUS, ASPCA, Best Friends and other main stream group. Nathan Winograd attacks, harasses, stalks, defames everyone in his blog here while claiming he has freedom of speech http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?page_id=166 . What's ironic is he threatens to sue anyone who merely disagrees with him. He has freedom of speech but they don't. If they are public figures, then so is Nathan. He still cannot intentionally make up lies about them yet he does.

I have known Nathan Winograd since 2005. I have known him to be a nasty, pathological liar, plagiarist and someone who is willing to work with ADL and ALF to terrorize government officials. He bragged to me in email that he will get "his" activists, i.e. ADL, ALF, to force the then Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa to hire him for a month for $20K/shelter. We had six shelters and an annex at that time. Yes, he wanted $140,000 for a month of work.

Nathan Winograd admitted he was offered the GM position at Los Angeles for $155K/yr but he said no. He only wanted to consult. Why? If he could make any shelter nokill over night like he says, why wouldn't he want to make LA nokill and show the world what he can do? Because he has not and cannot make any shelter nokill. He likes to just criticize a shelter then when they are still euthanizing animals he attacks and blames them for their failure. If I could show, tell LA how to be nokill, I would do it for free. Who would not want to save all the animals? Nathan Winograd knows he cannot make a shelter nokill. That's why he lies about his "accomplishments" all the time.

I've written and reposted a few blogs about Nathan Winograd in this blog. Some articles I wrote years ago and just reposted here. Go to top left and search his last name. I posted his entire history with dates so you can see that he does not tell the truth. He says he was the "Director" of SFSPCA. He was the director for nine days, quit, breached his contract and was fired. Nathan Winograd does not work well with others. That's why he works for himself and basically has been living off his wife's parents. He admitted to me again in email that he mortgaged his home in 2005 or so then was forced to sell it because he couldn't make any money consulting. All he does is write and talk. That's it.

I will end this post with a link to a 100% honest article written about a seminar he gave at the LA Bar Association. I was at this meeting along with some lawyers, city employees, rescuers I know. This did indeed happen. Nathan Winograd said all of these false and outrageous things. He says the exact same things in his book word for word, i.e. cats are more likely to get rabies from us than we are from them, should we get rid of all windows to save birds, should we protect worms from birds, wildlife groups Audubon, ABC...are just like Hitler and the Nazi's, all researchers in the entire world are liars, outdoor cats are good for the environment and wildlife... Nathan Winograd lost this lawsuit.

Fish amoxycillin for cats, dogs, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums ... Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

*I am not a vet. I am not giving veterinary or medical advice. I'm just sharing some information which is already very well known in animal rescue. Always take the animal to a vet for proper diagnosis, treatment and medication.

Some people use over the counter fish or bird antibiotics for other animal species including humans. This is the same medication given to humans. They are NON-PRESCRIPTION fish antibiotics. You can also find bird antibiotics. They are USP grade antibiotics produced by pharmaceutical companies. Some use amoxy capsules which they mix with water to make liquid pet amoxicillin. Liquid amoxy for pets is 250 mg per 5 ml/cc. 15 ml/cc of this retails for $18-$25 if you buy it from a vet. If you rescue a lot of animals who come in with URI, UTI, kennel cough, infected wounds ... that would get pretty expensive. Here is a way to drop the price from $25/bottle to .29 cents. You are still paying retail for the amoxy and get pharmaceutical grade antibiotics but are saving a lot of money. This information is only for experienced animal rescuers.

Pet liquid amoxy is 250 mg per 5 ml/cc. Retail $18-$20. This is similar to pet liquid clavamox. The recommended dose of amoxicillin oral suspension in dogs and cats (squirrels, raccoons, opossums, skunks, foxes, bobcats, coyotes) is 5-10mg/pound every 12-24 hours. Some give 10mg/lb day one then 5mg/lb day 2 - 7.

Buy a bottle of 100 x 250mg capsules of "Fish Mox" available in pet stores like Petco, PetSmart or online at CatVetSupply.com , DrsFosterSmith.com for about $14 to $22. The capsules come in different colors generally tan/yellow and light pink/dark pink. If you are treating an animal that weighs 5 lbs or more, take three capsules. Pull apart the capsules and dump the powder of three capsules into a little bottle that can hold 15 ml/cc of fluid and has a lid. Add 15 ml/cc (3 teaspoons) of clean water. Shake. Oral dosage is 5-10mg/lb/day for seven days. Refrigerate. Discard any unused mixed liquid amoxy after seven days. It will change color and is no longer good. You can store the capsules for a long time. If you are dosing a small animal like a tree squirrel (2 lb), ground squirrel (1-1.5 lb), only use one capsule and mix with only 5 ml/cc of water. Years ago I took a baby squirrel to a vet. Vet prescribed a baytril injection to treat an infection. The dosage should have been .15 cc based on his weight. Instead the vet tech accidentally gave 1.5 cc! This is 10x the dosage. Squirrel had massive diarrhea. I called the vet who said to give fluids. Squirrel still had massive diarrhea. I searched online and could only think they accidentally gave too much antibiotics which killed all his gut flora. I called the vet tech. She told me they gave him 1.5 cc and I said that's way too much. I gave him probiotics and he survived. If someone were to accidentally give too much antibiotics, give probiotics. Bene-bac sold in pet stores is good. If you don't have that, give a tiny bit of yogurt. Give yogurt and fluids until the diarrhea stops. Then slowly reintroduce foods. Amoxy is not a super strong antibiotic so the change of this happening is extremely rare.

INDICATIONS FOR AMOXICILLIN ORAL SUSPENSION

Amoxicillin Oral Suspension is of of the primary antibiotics for cats and dogs used against drug-resistant bacteria and is meant for effectively treating respiratory tract infections, wounds, skin infections, tooth abscesses, genitourinary tract and urinary bladder infections among others. Amoxicillin oral suspension is semisynthetic penicillin based antibiotic, with broad spectrum bactericidal activity against various strains of bacteria such as H. influenzae, N. gonorrhoea, E. coli, Pneumococci, Streptococci etc. It is not effective for viral or parasitic infections.Amoxicillin oral suspension is a popular medication for dogs and cats as it could be administered easily and ensures easy absorption. Trihydrate is the main active ingredient in Amoxicillin Oral Suspension.

PRECAUTIONS

Amoxicillin Oral Suspension should be used only for proven bacterial infections. Animals that are allergic to penicillin should not be given this medication. Extreme caution is required while using this medication in dehydrated animals or those with kidney or heart disorders. Though it can cross over placenta of pregnant animals to the offspring, it is considered relatively safe to use during pregnancy. Amoxicillin Oral Suspension can react with medications such as allopurinol and erythromycin, so it is advisable to discuss the medication history of the pets with the vet before starting the treatment.

DOSAGE

The recommended dose of amoxicillin oral suspension in dogs and cats (squirrels, raccoons, opossums, skunks, foxes, bobcats, coyotes) is 5-10mg/pound every 12-24 hours. Amoxicillin can be given without any food restrictions as it is stable in gastric conditions. Unused medication should not be used after 14 days.

SIDE EFFECTS

Common side effects when using amoxicillin include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Allergic reactions are characterized by symptoms like rashes, fever, swelling of face or limbs, difficulty breathing, rapid heart beat and loss of coordination, which require urgent medical aid. A drug overdose might result in vomiting and diarrhea, where the veterinarian should be contacted urgently.
