Ed Boks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ed Boks (Born August 14, 1951 in Harper Woods, Michigan) is the former head of the Los Angeles
Department of Animal Services (January 2006 to April 2009). "Boks resigned in the face of pressure
from officials, with complaints over his decision-making and operation of the department."[1]
During his tenure at Los Angeles Animal Services Boks' term was marred with controversy.[2]Boks'
predecessor, Guerdon Stuckey, had been the target of threats and a smoke bomb attack by extremist
animal rights activists. Stuckey was fired by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and replaced by
Boks.[3] Dr. Gary Michelson introduced Ed Boks to the Mayor and suggested that he hire him in
exchange for $10,000,000.[4][5][6] Animal Defense League Los Angeles and the Animal Liberation
Front attacked Ed Boks through protests at his residence and direction action[7]. Boks was known for
advocating a "No-Kill" approach in his previous positions in Maricopa County, Arizona and New York
City though he never made any of those shelters "No-kill."[8]He was fired from New York City Animal
Control after being sued for racial discrimination. He fired an experienced black employee so he could
hire his white friend who had a criminal record. The judge ruled that "defendant terminated plaintiff
because of his race."[9]

During his last year at Los Angeles Animal Services, criticism of his performance grew, as members of
the city council and his own staff increasingly expressed their lack of confidence. City Councilmember
Richard Alarcon made a motion for a vote of "no confidence" in Ed Boks[10]which was seconded by
Councilmembers Dennis Zine, Bernard Parks, Eric Garcetti and Tony Cardenas.[11]Boks was also sued
by animal activist Mary Cummins-Cobb for sexual harassment. [12]The complaint states that Boks
"showed up at Plaintiff's home unannounced, uninvited, and drunk, after being told by Plaintiff not to
come" over.[13]Settlement was $130,000 which was approved by every council member.[14]
Boks was forced to resign his post and left Los Angeles Animal Services on April 24, 2009, effective
June 30, 2009. He spent his last two months out of the office with the Assistant General Manager acting
in his place.[15]Though LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa issued a statement thanking Ed Boks for his
service trying to make Los Angeles a "no kill" city, Ed Boks noted that it had been a mutual decision
between himself and city officials[16].

Since leaving Los Angeles Animal Services Boks applied for a job at Whatcom Humane Society for 1/3
his previous salary. [17]After much controversy caused by Boks' poor reputation and a Los Angeles City
press release which he falsified[18]that position was instead given to another candidate.[19]

Prior to being involved in animal control Boks was a Pastor at a Christian church and school in Phoenix,
Arizona in the 1980's. "Boks has an unlikely background: He never graduated from college, worked as a
minister and fought an allergy to cats much of his life."[20]
