Pope Francis tells couple not to forgo kids for pets - Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

Pope Francis tells couples not to forgo kids for pets - Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

Pope Francis, people who forgo pets for kids will end up old and loney. Nope. Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates
Today 77 year old Pope Francis said that people who forgo kids for pets will end up "old" and "lonely."

"You can go explore the world, go on holiday, you can have a villa in the countryside, you can be carefree," the pope said. "It might be better — more comfortable — to have a dog, two cats, and the love goes to the two cats and the dog. Is this true or not? Have you seen it?

"Then, in the end this marriage comes to old age in solitude, with the bitterness of loneliness."

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/lifestyle/58017819-80/couples-pope-cats-love.html.csp

The Pope is 77 years old and has no kids. Is he bitterly alone? I doubt it. If you have cats and dogs instead of kids, you won't be alone when you're old because you'll still have cats, dogs and friends.

The Pope needs to take a look around. Yes, the birth rate is down but we still have way too many people on this planet. The earth can't support all of these people especially as our consumption of goods increases. Third world countries didn't used to have many cars, TVs, cell phones, computers. Now they are consuming goods almost at the same pace as first world countries.

Why would the Pope want more children? They actually used to reward and encourage people years ago to have big families. The more children the more Catholics the more money donated to the church. It's like any business trying to expand it's market base.

Reuniting, rescuing baby squirrels - Mary Cummins, Animal advocates, Los Angeles

Reuniting, rescuing baby squirrels - Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, Los Angeles, California, real estate

Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, Los Angeles, California, squirrel rescue, squirrel reunite

We get quite a few of these a week but I'll just share one. A woman found some baby squirrels and with the help of our website reunited them with their mother. Please, share this so others can reunite baby squirrels. It's our second baby squirrel season and everyone is getting full. Every baby reunited is a baby saved.

"I want to say a heartfelt THANK YOU for posting the page about reuniting baby squirrels with their mother.  My cat, Russy, brought one of them to me this morning unhurt...he was so gentle.  I took the baby into a dishtowel and stood, mind racing, what should I do now?  I heard an adult squirrel raising cain over by the fence, so I figured that was the mama, knowing her baby had fallen from the nest.  I went to investigate and found another one, my other cat Pee-Wee was touching its tail and making it squeal.  I picked up that baby and put it in the towel with the other and they cuddled up. Neither baby seemed to be hurt, which was just amazing to me.

My first thought was to take them to the vet...then I thought, No, they're so busy out there...Google the problem.  So I did.  and I clicked on your page and did everything you said to do.  I found a box, rigged it with twine so I could tie it to sturdy branches in a dogwood tree next to the big maple nesting tree.  Then, was the task of getting the babies to turn loose of the towel so I could put them on the leaves I'd put in the box for them.  they held on to
the towel, then they held on to my fingers, and I just teared up...little babies, so vulnerable and trusting..

Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, Los Angeles, California, squirrel rescue, squirrel reunite

I left them but have been coming back to check on them about every 2 hours today.  At 3:30 I heard the mama squacking, I figured she'd noticed the box, with the still sleeping babies inside.  I came back inside and when I went back to check on them at 5:00, I got close to the tree and Mama ran about half way up the tree and stopped and looked directly at me.  I stopped, too.  She skittered on up the tree and I went on to check the box again...this time it was empty!  She had taken her babies home!  I was ecstatic!  Thank you so much, again...I would have been devastated if this had turned out any other way.

Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, Los Angeles, California, squirrel rescue, squirrel reunite

I'm still blown away by the fact that my two cats that found them chose not to make them breakfast.  My old cat, Russy, has a newfound place in my heart for his kindness and intelligence on knowing what to do to save these babies.  Ya gotta love that..."

Thanks so much for reuniting the baby squirrels!

Here is our article on reuniting baby squirrels. Please, share this note.

Bot fly larvae on squirrels, other animals - Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

Bot fly larvae on squirrels, other animals - Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

During the late summer and fall months you will see animals with what appear to be large infected swellings on their backs, around their necks or areas which are not easy for them to reach to clean. These are most likely bot fly larvae. The photo above from the Squirrel Board shows some bot fly larvae attached under the skin of a squirrel. Some larvae have already left the host. You will see large holes in the skin after the larvae emerge.

"Bot flies: The Oestridae are a family of flies variously known as bot flies, warble flies, heel flies, gadflies, and similar names. Their larvae are internal parasites of mammals, some species growing in the host's flesh and others within the gut."

"The word "bot" in this sense means a maggot. A warble is a skin lump or callus such as might be caused by the presence of a warble fly maggot under the skin."

The fly lays an egg on the animal's skin. The egg hatches and the larva emerges. The larva burrows into the skin and attaches to the animal. It will live off the host until it is ready to drop off and continue the pupal stage in the soil. Then it turns into a fly. More from wiki below.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bot_fly

"The tree squirrel bot fly, Cuterebra emasculator Fitch, is an obligate parasite of tree squirrels and chipmunks throughout most of eastern North America. The adult and other life stages are seldom seen; instead, what is usually observed from July through September or October is the outcome of infestation, namely the relatively large, fluid-draining swellings (‘warbles') in a host's hide caused by the subcutaneous larvae."

Treatment from the Squirrel Board:

"If the bot fly larva is not in an area that restricts movement or other functions, it can be left intact and will drop off at maturity. The sight on your animal is gruesome, but in many cases they only cause mild irritation for the animal. Once the warble drops out, clean the wound with an antiseptic and apply topical ointment if needed. On very small mammals such as mice, the warble can be life threatening -- it may need to be surgically removed.

If the bot fly is killed while it is living under the skin of the mammal, it can release a toxin which can cause anaphylactic shock (this is one reason why we don't try to kill it while it is still there). Oral antibiotic treatment may be indicated if a secondary infection develops in the warble.

A mature bot fly larva is large enough to be carefully removed using tweezers or forceps. Sometimes slow, steady pressure AT THE BASE of the warble can push the larva out thru the opening. Be sure not to kill the larva in the process. The warble pore can then be flushed with chlorhexiderm@ or saline solution and a topical antibiotic applied if needed."

I personally would only trap the squirrel, chipmunk, mouse and remove the larvae if it's a small animal, very young animal, very old animal, lactating/weak/skinn, injured, infected or the animal appears weak. Otherwise they will drop off. Trapping and treating wild animals can cause more stress than the bot fly larvae. If you trap a lactating female, you must instantly treat and return to the exact place where found so she can nurse her young.

I spoke with my vet. He said Capstar or Ivermectin might help. Squirrel dosage is similar to cat by weight. Adult fox squirrels weigh about 2 lbs.

Here's a great article about US bot fly larva that affect squirrels, chipmunks, mice, hares and rabbits.

http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/misc/flies/squirrel_bot_fly.htm

Howler monkey with bot fly larvae being removed. This species of bot fly is larger than the ones on squirrels in the US. The monkey is sedated. He's not dead. The vet is pulling live larvae out of the warble. The hole you see is how the larva breaths. The larva is attached to the host by it's mouth so it can feed off the host. If you do remove them, grab the larva firmly with tweezers. Try not to squish it. You want to slowly, gently pull it out whole. Some put vaseline or tape over the hole to first suffocate the larvae which makes them easier to remove.

Animal Advocates is a 100% "green" organization in Los Angeles, California - Mary Cummins

Animal Advocates rescues ill, injured and orphaned native wildlife for release back to the wild. Most animals that enter our facilities have been injured or left orphaned due to human activity. We rescue these animals while being a 100% "green" organization. Animal Advocates follows the three main principles to lessen our impact and the impact of others on the environment and animals. Reuse, Reduce, Recycle!

REUSE. Animal Advocates accepts used, damaged pet crates, supplies and cages that would otherwise end up in landfills. All of our large animal enclosures are made from used caging and fencing material. The roofs are made from used roofing materials. We reuse old sweatshirts by turning them into animal beds. We turn damaged dog houses and crates into nest boxes for wildlife.

REDUCE. Animal Advocates accepts unwanted food which reduces food dumped in land fills. We accept leftover food from catering companies and grocery stores. We also accept freezer burned meat, torn/open bags of food, over ripe fruit and vegetables, dropped flowers and other food items that would not be eaten by humans. Not only does the food not end up in landfills but it feeds hungry wildlife in our rehabilitation facility. The donor gets a tax write off and we reduce the amount of food we must buy.

RECYCLE. Animal Advocates is an almost paperless organization. What paper we do use is recycled, so are our ink cartridges. While we try to minimize packaging in what we buy, we make sure everything we do use is recyclable. Every single item that can be recycled is recycled. Any items that we can't find for free online are bought used. We also compost yard trimmings, herbivore poop and any leftover herbivore food which we use in our organic garden which provides food for the wildlife.

These are but a few of our many programs to reuse, reduce and recycle. We drive a gas saving Prius and most of our volunteers are vegan or vegetarian which helps the planet. All of our events are 100% vegan according to our vegan corporation bylaws via the Food For Thought Campaign. This saves animals, the planet and everyone's health. Every time we reuse, reduce and recycle it prevents usable goods from ending up in landfills, helps the community, environment and saves animals' lives. Because we are a non-profit recognized by the IRS the donor also gets a tax deductible receipt. If you'd like to donate to our organization, please, visit our website or Facebook page.

Blaming cats for bird deaths won't save birds. Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

Blaming cats for bird deaths won't save birds. Neither will blaming humans. We all must work together.

Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

This is a particularly controversial and heated subject. Some bird, wildlife, environment organizations such as American Bird Conservancy, Audubon would like cats to stay indoors. They state cats kill some birds and this is true. It is also true that humans, wildlife, dogs, other birds also kill birds. Those are the facts.

Cat organizations for some reason think bird, wildlife, environment organizations want to kill all cats. That is blatantly false. I am pro bird, cat, dog, wildlife and environment. I don't want to kill any animal. I'm starting to think this is propaganda so some cat people can dump cats outside and feed them. This debate has become a big "bird people verses cat people" battle when it shouldn't be. We are all pro-animal. Let's first review some facts.

I just received this flyer below in Facebook. It's from Alley Cat Allies. Let me first correct some misinformation. They state "cats have been living outside alongside humans for 10,000 years as a natural part of the ecosystem." This is absolutely false.

The domestic cat was bred by humans. They are believed to have been descended from a small African wild cat approximately 10,000 years ago. Humans then continued to breed cats for tameness and various physical features. Humans spread the domestic cat all over the entire world.

"Domestic cats are a major predator of wildlife in the United States killing an estimated 1.4–3.7 billion birds and 6.9–20.7 billion mammals annually. The bulk of the predation the United States is done by 80 million feral and stray cats." Outdoor cats are killing birds and mammals. Many research studies have been done which prove this beyond a shadow of a doubt. As a wildlife rehabilitator we get in many birds and small mammals that have been injured or killed by cats and dogs though mainly cats.

For some reason cat people think bird, wildlife, environment people want ALL cats killed. That is most certainly false. They actually just want domestic cats to be kept enclosed in a home or sanctuary so they can't kill birds, wildlife or negatively affect the environment. They'd also like to see the outdoor population of feral and tame domestic cats to be reduced over time.

Domestic cat proponents developed TNR programs to try to control the cat populations. The theory behind the Trap Neuter and Return theory is if you spay and neuter all cats in a colony, their population should be reduced to zero within one generation or approximately seven years. They state the current cats would not allow new cats into the colony. This would be fantastic if it actually worked but it doesn't. TNR only works in a vacuum. Many research studies have shown it does not work in the real world. The problem is implementation.

A proper TNR colony would be a group of cats located away from wildlife areas or sensitive ecosystems and waterways. The colony should be hidden so the public cannot see it. If people see the colony, they will dump un-neutered pets and the population will increase. ALL cats must be spayed and neutered. This is sometimes impossible as some cats are trap shy. The caretaker must clean feces and urine so as not to cause a nuisance. They also must not leave food. They should feed once a day for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes they must remove all food or wildlife will be attracted to the food and cause a nuisance besides spreading disease. All cats must be properly microchipped, vaccinated and receive proper veterinary care. These things don't happen in the real world.

I am frequently called to failed TNR colonies. The caretakers don't neuter all animals due to cost. They instead only feed them. The cat population has increased. Feces, fleas and unwanted wildlife create a public nuisance. Cats need veterinary care and are dying from disease. They are killing birds and wildlife, spreading disease to wildlife. This causes members of the public to petition their city to trap, remove, kill the cats. And this is when the cat people yell foul and go running to politicians with their misinformation.

TNR does not work in the real world. The only "studies" were anecdotal and written by the colony caretaker. What then is the solution to cat overpopulations and the increased demise of birds and wildlife? Bird, wildlife, environment organizations would like all domestic cats to be kept indoors or enclosed. This is also better for the cat as they are protected from predators, cars, mean people, disease and fights. That is of course impossible to do in large numbers at the moment. A better sterilization method that could permanently sterilize all cats via an oral dose would be ideal. We are getting closer to that every day. I'm sure the cat people also want to humanely reduce the cat population. Cats are being killed in the shelters by the millions every year. Unwanted outdoor cats are being poisoned or shot.

The flyer I received said go to http://www.alleycat.org/SaveTheBirds to learn how to save the birds. Flyer also said "blaming cats won't save the birds. If we want to change the statistics, we have to change our actions." I went to the page and there were no suggestions to solve the problems. It just said that humans kill birds. Humans, wildlife, cats, dogs, other birds ALL kill birds. Bird people aren't asking to kill cats. I hope cat people aren't asking to kill humans. We all must work to solve the problem. I have some suggestions to calm the bird vs cat war.

Cat people must do everything they can to do a better job with TNR. They should also focus on spay and neuter for all cats. Perhaps they can find a way to build some inexpensive cat sanctuaries and make it easier for people to have cat sanctuaries. More research needs to be done on a one dose permanent sterilant and ways to keep cats from killing birds and wildlife.

Dog people who have dogs that kill birds and wildlife should not leave dogs unattended outside. If that is not possible, they should make sure they don't have a bird feeder or any plants that birds like to eat. They should not have a bird bath either. They should make sure to secure trash cans, pick up dropped fruit so skunks, opossums, raccoons won't enter their yard. Dogs should be walked on a leash.

Bird people should continue to find ways to decrease the number of birds killed every year. They have made a glass that birds can see so they won't fly into it and die. They are monitoring pesticides, human development and are working to improve wind power turbines. Everyone is working on climate issues.

If cat people think that "blaming cats won't save birds," well, blaming humans also won't save birds. Bird, cat, dog, wildlife people must all work on this project together. Bird and cat people would both be happy to humanely reduce the number of cats and outdoor cats. We are on the same team and need to stop the fighting. The fighting is impeding progress.
