When is a non-profit not a non-profit? SeaWorld, Shedd Aquarium, Monterey Bay Aquarium. Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates

Monterey Bay Aquarium, SeaWorld Adventure Park, Shedd Aquarium, when a non-profit is actually a for-profit business
SeaWorld is a for-profit company with 11 theme park/aquariums. They state their goal is to make a profit while promoting marine conservation. Yes, they force their animals to do tricks, keep them in small tanks, don't give them the best care. This article only deals with finances and taxes. In 2013 they made $1.46 billion from their parks, merchandise, restaurants...Their EBITDA was $439 million. Their CEO makes $675K/ye. You can swim with animals, touch the animals. While they were, are profitable, they don't pay Federal taxes, Florida corporation taxes because of write offs from debt payments, deductions. They state they pay tens of millions in other forms of state, federal, property...taxes.

The Shedd aquarium is legally a non-profit but it is definitely a for profit zoo. People pay to visit the aquarium and can pay extra to play with a beluga whale or penguin, just like SeaWorld. They state they need donations to care for this tiny sea otter pup. They make $73,000,000 a year from their zoo/aquarium with $350,000,000 in assets, $177,000,000 in cash. They don't need money for this pup. He should have been rehabbed here for release back to the wild. He's being used to make money. They have $22,000,000 in salaries, CEO makes $3,500,000 per year! They turn a big profit every year over $20,000,000. Zoo masquerading as a non-profit sanctuary. Here is their 990 for 2012. They only pay some payroll taxes. They receive $5 million from taxes paid by others.

CEOs of Monterey Bay Aquarium, SeaWorld, Shedd Aquarium
Monterey Bay Aquarium takes in $66 million a year. They also have over $300 million in assets. Julie Packard Director makes about $300K/yr. 12 other people have over $150K and even $200K/yr. They spend $1.2 million on animals. The aquarium turns a nice profit. They have $80 million in cash. $150M in stocks and bonds. If you look at the end of their 990, you can see their sea otter activity. They even work with SeaWorld. They give them pups. Only pay payroll taxes.

Monterey Bat Aquium, SeaWorld San Diego, Shedd Aquarium maps, non-profit verses for-profit business
Right now people are trying to get the NFL's non-profit status yanked. I didn't even know they were a non-profit. They are a 501 6 c corporation, an "industry association." They are legally a non-profit just like a church. Seems there are many other organizations which are also non-profit such as social club, fraternity, business league, labor organization, veterans, employee benefits... They make $9 billion a year. Commissioner makes $44 million/year.

If you look at these companies, they all look like for-profit organizations to me. They are big business. To me a non-profit should be a charity, true church...an organization that helps the public good. Their main goal is to help people, not make a lot of money. That is just tax evasion.

When you consider that for-profit SeaWorld didn't pay taxes even in 2011 when they had record earnings it probably doesn't even matter if a company is for profit or non-profit. If they are bringing in enough money, they will find a creative way to not pay any taxes. I think if the nation wants to get a better grip on taxes, the economy, they need to rein in this tax abuse. They are all businesses making an awful lot of money.

Breed specific legislation (BSL) and pitbulls. Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates, Los Angeles, California

Pitbull, breed specific legislation, bsl, mary cummins, animal advocates, los angeles, california
Preface: I'm not against pitbulls. I don't want them all killed. I'm not calling for making ownership of pits illegal. I fostered a pit. I am just asking people to look at the data, research, facts and make an informed decision about which breed of dog is best for you, your family and the public.

Many organizations are against breed specific legislation or BSL. HSUS is against BSL. Below is an article they wrote. http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/breed-specific-legislation/fact_sheets/breed-specific-legislation-flaws.html

Then there are those who are for BSL and outlawing any dangerous dog regardless of breed. http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics.php

HSUS states we have no statistics which show that one breed is more dangerous, more likely to bite or injure than another. That is not true. Independent insurance companies, the US post office, trauma surgeons, animal experts...have indeed done research backed with data, see above link. This research shows that pitbulls are the most likely breed to cause severe mauling and/or death. While chihuahuas are more likely to bite, pits are more likely to kill you if they bite. They also don't show any pre-bite warnings. They seem to bite, attack out of the blue. When they bite, they don't stop. They try to go for the jugular, head and face which is a clear attempt at trying to kill the victim.

HSUS states that dogs just need proper training, neutering, treatment...in order to not bite. I have seen quite a few pitbull attacks. They seem to come out of the blue from healthy, happy, well cared for homes. They attack for no reason. I fostered a pit, took the pitbull classes in LA and trained my dog. I wanted to take all precautions so he would never harm any animal or human. He never did during his entire life as far as I know. I've also seen quite a few videos of attacks. Again, some attack for no reason and refuse to let go of the victim. I've seen the injuries to humans and other dogs.

Note that I said "some." I didn't say all. I don't think that every pitbull will kill someone. That is ridiculous. I just believe based on data that if one is attacked by a pitbull, they are more likely to suffer catastrophic injury and/or death than if they were attacked by another non-molosser breed. This is similar to motorcycle verses car accidents. Motorcyclists are less likely to be involved in an accident but they are more likely to be injured in an accident for obvious reasons.

I am not calling for people to ban, kill pitbulls. I just want people to look at the data and reality of the situation. Make an informed decision about bringing one into your home or out on the street. Making up the false pro-pit propaganda makes matters worse. Pits were never nanny dogs. That is a myth. They were intentionally selectively bred for fighting from mastiffs, bulldogs and terriers. See link directly above for their history. They used to fight bears and bulls. When that was outlawed they trained the dogs to fight each other. They intentionally breed the strongest, fiercest dog that won't ever stop fighting, won't let go, can take a massive beating but still fight, won't warn that they will fight, will still fight if they see submissive posture from another dog or person....

Stop telling people pits are great with kids. Many people believed this and intentionally adopted a pit only to have it maul and kill their child. Read the articles in Voices of the Victims website linked below. These people were suckered in by the nanny dog myth. They paid for that with the life of their children and family. They clearly state this in the articles written in the first person by the victims' family members.

We already have breed specific legislation. It's illegal to own a wolf, coyote, fox, raccoon dog, jackal, dhole, painted dog... without proper permits and in proper secured enclosures where they cannot pose a danger to the public. They are illegal because governments have deemed them to be dangerous to humans. The government already stated some canines pose a threat to humans. Some are just plain illegal in some cities and/or states period. All dogs are in the canine family. We humans have specifically bred "domestic" dogs from wolves. http://mentalfloss.com/article/30959/14-your-dogs-wild-relatives

If we already have BSL, why are dog owners saying that BSL is wrong? It's very hypocritical to be for and against BSL at the same time. If one can't own a wolf, why another breed with a similar history of fatal maulings? Currently in the US you are more likely to be killed by a pitbull than a wolf, coyote, fox... Wolves, coyotes, foxes, raccoon dogs were bred through natural selection to survive. That means through natural selection the wolves, coyotes, foxes who could find food, mate, stay away from predators...would breed and pass on those genes. They were not selectively bred to fight to the death and never stop fighting. That would make no sense in the wild. We humans selectively bred pitbulls to do very unnatural things such as fight to the death for no reason and never stop. We did this so we could gamble and make money on the fight outcome.

Another thing about the anti-BSL movement is that it is breed discrimination. If you are against banning pits, you are against people adopting other breeds of dogs. For each pit that gets adopted, another breed of dog dies in the shelter. That's okay? Again, I am not for making ownership of pitbulls illegal. I'm against any and all dogs, canines that pose a threat to humans. If I had a poodle that bit people, I'd muzzle it in public, get it training...do everything to prevent it from harming someone. When I fostered my pit I had him on a prong and slip collar with a strong leash. I never let him off leash ever except in the house with my cats locked in another room. I never let him get near kids or dogs without me right there holding him tight on his leash.

A last note, why adopt, buy a pitbull over all the other many breeds of dogs? I realize people do this so they can feel like a hero adopting the ugly, unwanted, "misunderstood" pitbull. Others do it to look macho and manly or to fight. I can't find one reason why someone would adopt this dog breed over all others. Why not a labrador, golden retriever, dalmation, german shepherd if you want a larger breed of dog? They are all loyal, sweet, playful... This is the point of my article. Why adopt, buy a pit over all other breeds of dog? I just want people to think about that. Look at the research and facts. Make an informed decision. Don't get a pit because someone said it'd be great with your baby. Get a dog based on your lifestyle, family, needs and wants. Don't adopt a pit just to feel like a savior. You're a savior if you adopt any dog or cat. It goes without saying don't get one to look macho or to fight.

Here is a website from the victims of pitbull attacks below. They forewarn you about gory content such as eyes, ears, hands ripped off, complete scalping, bites down to the bone, severed fingers, noses, lips, jaws.... so don't worry. http://voicesofthevictims.org/

In closing here I am with my foster pit Buddy. He was a great dog who never harmed anyone. Would I foster another pit? No, I would foster another breed from a shelter. It's just not worth the risk and worry. There is no reason why the pit breed is better than all the other breeds. I can also tell you that it took me a year to find him a home because of his breed. I could have saved five other dogs during that time. Five other dogs died because I chose to foster this one. I only chose to foster him because three people said they'd instantly adopt him if I went and picked him up. They all flaked.

Nathan Winograd the misinformation machine. No Kill Advocacy, book Redemption

Nathan Winograd, No Kill Advocacy, book Redemption, All American Vegan, PETA, HSUS, ASPCA, Best Friends, SFSPCA, Tompkins SPCA
Here are some lies Nathan Winograd likes to tell about PETA. Notice, 99% of everything Nathan says is "HSUS, PETA, ASPCA are evil!!!. They enjoy killing animals. They want to kill all animals. They kill animals they get their hands on." This is of course false. He spends 99% of the time ONLY attacking other groups instead of trying to end pet euthanasia. Nathan Winograd does this so people will give him money, buy his books, pay for his seminars, watch his movie... Nathan Winograd attacks these groups for money. He's also very jealous that they are large, successful groups who are positively lobbying for animals while he can't make a living.

Below are just a few of the many lies he says about PETA. PETA's responses are also shared by HSUS, ASPCA, Best Friends and other main stream group. Nathan Winograd attacks, harasses, stalks, defames everyone in his blog here while claiming he has freedom of speech http://www.nathanwinograd.com/?page_id=166 . What's ironic is he threatens to sue anyone who merely disagrees with him. He has freedom of speech but they don't. If they are public figures, then so is Nathan. He still cannot intentionally make up lies about them yet he does.

1. PETA wants to kill all pitbulls. NOT TRUE.

Here is PETA's response.

2. PETA kills all cats, dogs, pets. NOT TRUE.

3. PETA wants all cats killed. NOT TRUE.

4. PETA is against saving shelter animals and want them all killed. NOT TRUE.

5. Why Nathan Winograd attacks PETA.

Here is PETA's response.
http://www.peta.org/living/companion-animals/nathan-winograds-redemption-kill-clue/

6. Nathan Winograd says there is no pet overpopulation. Wrong.

Here is PeTA's response.
http://www.peta.org/issues/companion-animal-issues/overpopulation/

I have known Nathan Winograd since 2005. I have known him to be a nasty, pathological liar, plagiarist and someone who is willing to work with ADL and ALF to terrorize government officials. He bragged to me in email that he will get "his" activists, i.e. ADL, ALF, to force the then Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa to hire him for a month for $20K/shelter. We had six shelters and an annex at that time. Yes,  he wanted $140,000 for a month of work.

Nathan Winograd admitted he was offered the GM position at Los Angeles for $155K/yr but he said no. He only wanted to consult. Why? If he could make any shelter nokill over night like he says, why wouldn't he want to make LA nokill and show the world what he can do? Because he has not and cannot make any shelter nokill. He likes to just criticize a shelter then when they are still euthanizing animals he attacks and blames them for their failure. If I could show, tell LA how to be nokill, I would do it for free. Who would not want to save all the animals? Nathan Winograd knows he cannot make a shelter nokill. That's why he lies about his "accomplishments" all the time.

I've written and reposted a  few blogs about Nathan Winograd in this blog. Some articles I wrote years ago and just reposted here. Go to top left and search his last name. I posted his entire history with dates so you can see that he does not tell the truth. He says he was the "Director" of SFSPCA. He was the director for nine days, quit, breached his contract and was fired. Nathan Winograd does not work well with others. That's why he works for himself and basically has been living off his wife's parents. He admitted to me again in email that he mortgaged his home in 2005 or so then was forced to sell it because he couldn't make any money consulting. All he does is write and talk. That's it.

I will end this post with a link to a 100% honest article written about a seminar he gave at the LA Bar Association. I was at this meeting along with some lawyers, city employees, rescuers I know. This did indeed happen. Nathan Winograd said all of these false and outrageous things. He says the exact same things in his book word for word, i.e. cats are more likely to get rabies from us than we are from them, should we get rid of all windows to save birds, should we protect worms from birds, wildlife groups Audubon, ABC...are just like Hitler and the Nazi's, all researchers in the entire world are liars, outdoor cats are good for the environment and wildlife... Nathan Winograd lost this lawsuit.

The truth about "Angora" - Animal Advocates, Mary Cummins

The truth about "Angora" - Animal Advocates, Mary Cummins

Angora rabbit, wool, fur, inhumane,  pluck, shear
The truth about "Angora." Angora is the soft downy shed undercoat of a moulting Angora rabbit. They naturally shed three times a year. The already shed fur would normally be brushed or plucked which should not be painful. I brush my bunny, skunky, kitty when they shed their under coat and they enjoy it. Factory farming and greed has caused some to pluck or shear ALL the fur off the rabbit which is inhumane and not even true "angora." Because we humans can no longer be trusted to harvest angora humanely, we should not buy angora products. I just wanted to point out that angora wasn't always inhumane.

We humans bred "angora" rabbits to have long, soft fur. Some have angora rabbits because they just love them. Others comb out the undercoat to sell as angora wool. We also bred some cats, dogs, other animals for the same qualities either just for aesthetics or for commercial use for clothing, fabrics.

These animals would not survive in the wild without humans to brush and maintain their unnatural coats. Should we have bred these animals for these traits which we then exploit for our own wants and needs? Maybe 500 years ago these things may have been needed for human clothing, i.e. angora, cashmere, fur, silk, leather, suede... Nowadays we have cotton, hemp and other plant based products which we can use to make clothing.

My personal feeling is that we shouldn't use animals for anything. It's not even mandatory for human survival. I wear cotton and not wool. I don't feel we should be breeding these animals for human use. I feel the same about animals as food. We bred the modern chicken, cow, pig, goat, sheep. Their original form was very different than today's animals.

I realize that everyone feels differently about this. The only thing I really care about is that animals be treated as humanely as possible. Ripping the fur off or shearing a rabbit is not humane. It's animal cruelty.
