Cottontail verses Jackrabbit, size, Mary Cummins, Animal Advocates
Cottontails are rabbits which are 10 to 19 inches in length and weigh 1½ to 3½ pounds. Jackrabbits are hares which are 18-26 inches long, weigh 4-8 lbs, and have 4-7 inch long ears. While they are very different animals people sometimes get them confused. We have both here in California.

Cotton tails are born hairless and blind. They are dependent on their mothers to nurse, clean, care for them. They are born in above ground nests.

Jackrabbits are born fully furred with their eyes open. They are precocial and can fend for themselves. They live in above ground nests.
